Chemistry, Physics bring smiles back to CET students

Chemistry, Physics bring smiles back to CET students

Bangalore: Candidates who emerged from examination halls on the second day of the Common Entrance Test (CET) on Thursday were a relieved lot.
Most of them were of the opinion that both the papers of the day —Chemistry and Physics — were easy compared to Wednesday’s Biology and Mathematics. “Compared to yesterday’s exams, today’s papers were easy. But the Chemistry paper was a bit trickier than the previous year’s papers,” said Hitesh Babu, a student in Christ PU College.
However, not everyone shared Babu’s opinion. “Physics was lengthy and it was also tougher than Chemistry. The paper was a real test of intelligence and subject knowledge,” said Arpitha CB of MES College.
Teachers and subject experts had their own view. “The Physics paper was not really tough. It was an above average paper. Twenty three per cent of the questions were easy, 66% moderate and 11% difficult to crack. This is the normal proportion of any CET paper,” said Dasharathi, faculty of Physics at BASE, an educational services organisation.
According to Dasharathi, about 34% of the questions that appeared in the paper were from the I PUC syllabus. “There weren’t any out of syllabus questions. But all the four options given for one of the questions (Q No 53 in version D1) were wrong. The question was based on Rayleigh scattering. The CET cell should do the needful regarding this. Another question (Q No 28 in version D1) also had incorrect options,” he said.
Some questions in the Chemistry paper were from outside the syllabus, said Prof YK Jayaramappa, faculty of Chemistry at BASE. “Most of the questions were based on more than one concept. Q No 24 of version D1was out of syllabus. It involved conversion of one compound to another. Question number 47 of the version D1 had two valid options instead of one and a few other questions were worded wrongly,” he said .
Gadinadu and Horanadu Kannadiga candidates will have compulsory Kannada test today.
