'DU Assessments ready, only to be tabulated'

'DU Assessments ready, only to be tabulated'

As Delhi University (DU) jumps from cobalt auction controversy to semester imbroglio, TOI catches up with varsity’s vice-chancellor Deepak Pental for his views on the new system. Excerpts:

Will the semester system be introduced from 2010-2011 session?

VC: It will be introduced in science and commerce courses this year. Next year, we will be introducing it in social sciences and humanities.

How do you respond to allegations that you are forcing the new system on teachers despite widespread opposition from them?

The question of accepting or rejecting does not arise as we have simply sought their suggestions on how to implement it. And once the academic council and executive council approve the system, it becomes non-negotiable. No one can be as democratic as we are. We have placed it on the website too, asking for suggestions from all stakeholders. Now DUTA is making all sorts of allegations simply to earn political points.

But teachers have been pressing for a debate on its desirability and feasibility. Your comment

Teachers at the behest of DUTA are coming up with new ideas. We can’t keep on deliberating endlessly if we have to move on. After all both PG and UG need a uniform calendar and a structure.

It is now over 16 days and the internal assessment has not yet been submitted. Will the results be delayed?

I trust the teachers and they will deliver. In fact, I got to know that the assessments are ready and just need to be tabulated. So, I don’t think the delay would adversely impact the future of the students.

DU has moved the HC against DUTA?

What else can we do? DUTA’s activities have led to the derailment of university functioning. Strikes and demonstration are impacting classes.
