Engineering college in trouble over census

Engineering college in trouble over census

Educational institutions across the city and suburbs are in serious trouble over providing staff for the National Census duty in the city under the jurisdiction of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). There are however, a few institutions that have valid reasons to prevent their staff from taking part in the exercise but the corporation denies listening to them.

The Pasharvnath Engineering College is one of the many institutions that have valid reasons to avoid its staff from being put on the census duty. The institution imparts education in engineering and conducts diploma courses for its students. Exams of the diploma students are currently going on and the teaching as well as the non-teaching staff is engaged currently.

A delegation of trustees from the college visited the civic headquarters on Tuesday, to highlight the problems that their staff would face if deputed on census duty. The civic administration had served them letters directing the college to provide 66 of its teachers and the principal for the national duty under the corporation. The letter dated April 21 was delivered to the college on April 28 and the staffers were asked to report for training on April 28 itself.

The delegation told MB Patil, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, TMC Headquarters that the diploma course examinations of its students were going on under the directives of the University of Mumbai. The exams would complete only on May 30. The trustees told Patil that the teachers sought by the corporation were on duty to conduct the exams.

The delegation said, "If our staffers report for census duty then they will not be able to conduct the exams and vice versa."

The trustees put a request to the Deputy Commissioner to cancel the letter; the TMC has given to the institution to provide the staff of 66 for the census duty, so that the staffers can conduct the exams of the diploma course students during the period.

MB Patil refused to retract the letter under any circumstances. The official however, said that he would give a letter rejecting their demands so that they can request the university to postpone the exams till the census work is over on June 15. The official handed over the letter and the trustees headed for the university to get relief.

There are at least six other engineering colleges in the city that are facing the same problem. Given, the attitude of the TMC all of them have to run to the university to get the exams postponed.
