Foreign varsity bill: Ashok Chavan wants best for Maharashtra education

Mumbai: Chief minister Ashok Chavan is all for bifurcation of universities. He also advocates tie-up of the corporate sector with foreign universities to upgrade the education system in Maharashtra.
Chavan plans to hold discussions with academicians to find out how the state can churn out the best of foreign universities eager to make inroads into India.
“I think it is worth looking at how we can promote our universities to built bridges with foreign universities. The state-private partnership in the education system has worked in Maharashtra. Now, in the backdrop if the foreign university bill we can also explore to get the best for our education system,” he had told DNA earlier.
The Foreign University Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha recently by union human resources development minister Kapil Sibbal. The bill seeks to streamline the entry and operation of foreign universities.
Unlike some states which are opposed to the bill, Maharashtra has always been supporting it. It also ranks among the states which have the highest number of students going abroad for higher education.
On bifurcation of Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur universities mooted by minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope, Chavan said, “It is a must. There are certain norms about the number of colleges/institutions that should be affiliated to each university. But we have already overshot the statistics. A committee will work out modalities and give a report on this.”
