From cinema halls to classrooms: Bollywood movies go a long way

From classroom lectures to films with messages, schools in Kolkata have come up with an innovative way to educate students. Films are being increasingly used by schools to sensitise students, groom them, enhance their skills or teach them important lessons of life.
So while Heritage School will screen Iqbal to teach students about setting and achieving goals, girls in Modern High will see Gone With the Wind to know more about the American civil war.
Sometimes movies like Anand are screened to spread cancer awareness among students. Meena Kak, the principal of Lakshmipat Singhania, says, “We believe in innovation in classroom teaching. Retention is higher among children in case of a visual medium. Sometimes, the kids themselves suggest films that are relevant to a particular lesson.”
Even Devi Kar, the principal of Modern High, believes that a topical film is very helpful for teachers who struggle to keep students interested in “drab” textbooks.
As per a report published in The Telegraph, films are used in some schools to hone creative skills of students. Speaking to the daily, Anuradha Das, the principal of Calcutta International School, said, “We show them certain movie clippings and then ask them to write the conclusion as they would interpret it. This helps in cognitive development of the children and hones their writing skills as well.”
Psychologists hail this trend say that the audio-visual media helps us communicate with those in the 12-20 age group. So while films like Lagaan is good for leadership training, movies like To Sir, With Love talks about “communication gap”.
