Sale of CATE forms begins in DU

NEW DELHI: Delhi University's department of English started the sale of forms for the Common Aptitude Test in English (CATE) on Thursday.

Nearly 500 forms were sold at 17 centres on the first day though the department expects the sale to pick up after the CBSE results are out on Friday. The forms will be available till May 31 while the test is scheduled for June 9.

Seventeen colleges, including Hindu, IP College for Women, Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College, Kamala Nehru College, will admit students in BA (honours) English through CATE this year.

"Most students buying CATE forms on the first day were from the ISC Board. The form sale will probably increase from Monday after the CBSE students known their marks. This year we have published nearly 15,000 forms whereas the total number of seats in 17 colleges is roughly 500," said professor Sumanyu Satpathy, head, department of English.

The process has been decentralized this year to avoid the chaos that prevailed last time when thousands of students had landed up at the Arts Faculty building on the North Campus. This year, the forms can be purchased and submitted at any of the 17 participating colleges. "The students have to fill an OMR form which costs Rs 300. It includes the registration as well as the examination fee," Satpathy said.

The test will have two parts. Only those answer scripts, which meet a certain cut-off in the objective-type questions, will be evaluated further while eliminating the rest. "However, there will be no elimination for the OBC candidates," Satpathy said. Students with a minimum of 60% aggregate and 60% in English can apply for this course.
