Beyond the Bachelor of Arts
Mumbai: After two years of spending time studying the subject of one's choice in junior college, it's now time to make an even more important decision of your life—what to do after appearing for the HSC exam?
It's been a month since the HSC exam got over, and those of you who have chosen to have a career in either medical or engineering, must have started preparing for the competitive entrance tests to get into the desired institute of your choice.
But, a few among you are yet to pick your choice, while some others don't know which suitable study programme to sign up for.
To solve this conundrum which every student faces at this crucial point of one's study years, DNA presents to you a host of options to choose from in order to make a conscious career choice.
The degree course
Arts students have the option of the bachelor's degree in Arts (BA) with specialisation in subjects like history, geography, political science, sociology, psychology, economics, Hindi, Sanskrit, etc.
Besides, there is a professional degree course for those who want to enter the media industry like the Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM). For those wanting to be a part of the ever-expanding hospitality industry a Bachelor of Hospitality Management (BHM) would be the right pick.
"It's important to sign up for a degree course, as it helps create a base for a secured future. Signing up for a certificate or diploma courses along with regular studies will help in building up a good portfolio," says Pervin Malhotra, executive director of CareerGuidanceIndia (CARING). "For Arts students there is no dearth of career and course options to select from," she adds.
Walking a different path
If you are not the one to take the conventional part of graduating in a degree course, then you can tread the path of vocational courses. Keeping in mind the popularity and expansion of skill-based industries like animation, fashion, jewellery designing and film-making many institutes offer a host of specialised courses.
The Zee Institute of Creative Arts (ZICA) is starting six-week summer courses in digital photography, gaming and visual effects. "At our institute we teach skill sets and not just the software training. Getting trained in such courses will give them an opportunity to identify their area of expertise," says
Subhadarshi Tripathy, head, ZIMA & ZICA.
On offer at the Zee Institute of Media Arts (ZIMA) are three to nine months training courses in acting, editing and film-direction. If you are not testing the waters and are sure of making a career in animation then the institute also offers a degree course in animation.
To tap the right potential into the beauty and hair-styling industry, the Lakmé Salon has set up a Lakmé Training Academy. A 17-week course including both theoretical and practical training will be provided at this academy.
"The certificate course is being offered in partnership with TIGI and Schwarzkopf. Apart from getting certified, students are also guaranteed a job at any of the Lakme salons," says Shilpa Sinha, chief marketing officer, Lakme Lever.
