IIMA, NID to increase intake this year

Ahmedabad: The number of students gaining admission to the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and the National Institute of Design (NID) will rise to its highest ever this year; the reason being the third and final academic year of the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directives to implement 27% reservation for OBC students in government funded institutes.
At IIMA, the number of students admitted to its flagship course, PGP in 2009- 2010, was 310. The figure will rise to 385 in this academic year.
Manager of global partnerships and corporate affairs at IIMA, Ishita Solanki, explained, “While this figure will include the full implementation of 27% OBC students, it will also consist of 15%
of students belonging to SC, 7.9% of students from ST and 3% students belonging to the Physically Challenged category.”
In NID also the total intake of student will increase from 90 last year to 100 for its under graduate programme, while the post graduate course will have 240 students this year, against 220 last year.
Registrar of NID, Vijaya Deshmukh, said, “We have been increasing the intake of the number of students under the OBC category in the last two years. Five per cent of the students admitted in 2008 were from OBC. This increased to 18% last year and this year it will be 27%.”
Deshmukh said that the number of students applying from the OBC category have also been increasing. She said, “the awareness about the reservation has increased and this is good
for us as well, as we get a larger pool of students to select from.”
The screening for admission is going on in IIMA with interviews being conducted in several centres. At NID, the common written test is over and the interviews will run from April 19 to May 6.
