ITG meet brings students closer to cosmology
Ahmedabad: A workshop on cosmology called COSMO-2010 began in Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-G) on Saturday. Eminent people from different areas of science shared their knowledge and information with the participants of the workshop on the first day of the two-day event.
More than 100 students from various institutes including IITG, DAIICT andNirma University participated in the workshop on the first day, which featured speakers from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Physical Research Laboratory, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Delhi University and others.
Talking about the idea behind organising the event, faculty of IIT-G Ameeya Bhagwat said, "Our mission is to widen the scientific horizon of the student community. The workshop aims to expose the student community to eminent people from the country from the area of science."
After the formalities of registration and inauguration, the day started with a session by Santosh Vadawale of PRL in which he shared with the students the Chandrayan-1 Mission. In the session Vadawale talked about the launch of the Chandrayan-1, the challenges and success and how it had contributed in terms technology advancement in the area of science.
Other sessions that followed included a session by TIFR scientist Atul Gurtu who spoke about Higgs Boson relating to the recent Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland which recently set a record for high-energy collisions by crashing proton beams into each other at three times more force than ever before in an attempt to understand the deepest mysteries of the universe and the Big Bang theory.
Other sessions included a presentation by PRL scientist P Janardhan, who explained how important the magnetic poles of the sun keep changing and the importance of understanding them for the students of science. A student of IIT-G, Abhilash Chowdary said, "The event is very exciting. Through the various sessions we got to know so much about astronomy and science which we don't get to learn in our general syllabus."
