Kozhikode: China, Ukraine MBBS racket fleeces students

Kozhikode: China, Ukraine MBBS racket fleeces students

An agency at Puthiyara offering MBBS admissions in China has resulted in many students in huge trouble. According to some parents, their ward has got admission in a university which is not recognised by the Medical Council. This agency provides admission to universities which are banned by India in Ukraine, also, they charge huge sums of money.
Recently a case came up in which a girl from Eranhipalam is trapped in Ukraine, she got admission to a blacklisted medical college, she has paid Rs 9.15 lakh. Her parents have borrowed money from their well-wishers as she really wanted to have an MBBS degree. Initially, this agency asked them to pay an amount of about Rs 3 lakh for initial expenses and said that they will provide admission in China but later on they told them that they would provide admission in Ukraine as many students from the state are studying there. The truth came up when medical college authorities in Ukraine informed that India does not recognise the varsity. Only due to the Keralite students in Ukraine made her stay back and explore what else she can do. The only way by which she could continue her studies from a recognized university is when the agency returns the money back. The complaint has been filed against that agency.
Students should be well aware of the existence of such fake agencies. There are many students and parents cheated by the agency but are scared to complain.

Only Punjab domicile students eligible for MBBS admission in the state

Only Punjab domicile students eligible for MBBS admission in the state

Just a day after the NEET result was declared, Punjab Medical Education Department announced the change in the admission criteria which left thousands of aspirants in shock. According to the new notification issued, only those having domicile of Punjab are eligible for medical colleges in Punjab for MBBS and BDS-2019. The notification issued earlier issued says that only those who have passed their Classes 10, 11 and 12 from Punjab were eligible for the MBBS course from the 2019-20 session which contradicts the new fact. In 2016, some in government service employees had shifted their children to Punjab so they could study Classes 10 to 12 and then get admission in Punjab MBBS college.  Parents have written to the Chief Minister asking him not to change the eligibility criteria at this point of time as it is going to affect many of them adversely. Earlier many students were taking double benefit one of their own state and others by passing Classes 10 to 12 from Punjab.

In China, only 45 varsities permitted to teach MBBS in English

In China, only 45 varsities permitted to teach MBBS in English

Now in China, only 45 are permitted to teach MBBS in English while other universities will teach in Chinese language. It is recommended that Indian students should be ready to learn Chinese language while studying medicine. Students are going to receive their degree in Chinese not in English.

This news came up when thousands of Indian students were expecting to apply in China in order to receive their degree.

It has also been reported that Schools which are not listed in the list of 45 universities will not recruit undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine, but only undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine taught in Chinese. Also, training standards should not be lower than standards of those of undergraduate students who are currently majoring in clinical medicine in China.

A teaching mode namely Bilingual Teaching Mode used to recruit foreign students in MBBS is strictly prohibited.
To see the list of those English taught MBBS universities can be seen on MoE website in English.

According to the statistics, In 2018, about 21000 Indian students were enrolled in China’s universities to obtain their MBBS degree.
In 2003, China allowed to foreign students to the subject here.

Every year number of students enrolling in China are increasing.
Over years, many Indian students are misled, they keep believing that they’ll taught in English not in Chinese. The major point of attraction to China is its fee structure. Those 45 listed universities costs between 3-5 lakhs per year while other universities are much cheaper, about 1.5-2 lakh per year.
List of those 45 universities along with the number of intakes of international students are as follows:

Australia And Canada becoming Popular Among Indian Students For Higher Studies

Australia And Canada  becoming Popular Among Indian Students For Higher Studies

There are so many reasons why Indian students should prefer to go to Australia and Canada to pursue their higher studies, be it the number of interdisciplinary programmes on offer or the stay-back opportunities provided by their respective governments.
For studyingabroad, the US was typically the first destination for Indian students. This trend has fallen down in the last few years due to factors like the depreciation of the Indian rupee, stricter visa requirements, and increasing intolerance towards foreign nationals within the US. These factors have made Indian students look for other options like Australia and Canada, which are fast emerging as the most in-demand higher education destinations in India.
According to the statistics, approximately 68,000 Indians opted to pursue higher education in Australia in 2017, a 14 per cent year-on-year increase over 2016. This was followed by 60,062 Indian students going to Australia for higher education by February 2018.
Instead of remaining concentrated in traditionally popular cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, students are beginning to explore new cities such as Gold Coast, Northern Territory, Adelaide, and Perth. Also, 46 per cent of the Indian parents are now choosing Australia as their child’s first preference for higher education.

Canada is also witnessing similar popularity as a preferred choice for Indian students. In 2017, Indian nationals were given as many as 83,540 study permits. The number of students who enrolled in science and technology courses is also significantly increasing day by day.
The reasons why these two countries have caught the attention of Indian students are listed below:
·        Post-study work permit
Many countries don’t offer the option of a post-study work permit to students but Australia and Canada do. Foreign students in Australia can apply for a post-study work visa if they have studied for 2 years or more in the country whereas Canada gives a work permit for 3 years to students on the completion of a Master’s degree from a Canadian university. The country also allows this permit to students pursuing a minimum of 8-month diploma from any community college.

·        Safety and affordability
Australia and Canada offer a safe study environment for foreign students. Also, the residents of these countries are very kind to foreigners and strongly support cultural diversity. Studying in Australia and Canada is also more affordable as compared to the US, be it in terms of the cost of living, tuition fees etc.

·        Multitude of courses
Reputed universities in Australia and Canada are also very famous for offering a vast range of courses. From STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses to management programmes, these two countries offer several options to students.

·        Permanent Residency
Sometimes, students want to stay back and seek employment in Australia and Canada after the completion of their studies, before applying for Permanent Residency. For that, they don’t have to go through a lot of hassle. The approval process is smooth and takes little time. Canada’s newly reformed Express Entry program has also drastically streamlined the approval process for foreign students looking to seek permanent residency in the country.

Fair and Open System-MBBS Abroad

Fair and Open System-MBBS Abroad

In India, all MBBS and BDS seats in the government/ aided/ private colleges except the AIIMS and JIPMER are under NEET examination.Even if one is looking for a medical degree abroad, he/she will still have to clear NEET.

Until last year, a letter of eligibility from the Medical Council of India (MCI) was enough to apply abroad. In 2018, a new rule was brought up by the MCI stating that qualifying NEET would be mandatory for Indian students aspiring for medical admissions abroad as well; however, later the Delhi High Court gave a one-time exception that ended last year only.

If one wonders that why studying medicine abroad is so lucrative, the answer is that the number of seats available in Indian institutions is quite low , according to the statistics, only one out of 13 students appearing for NEET will be admitted. With about 56.27% of students qualifying in NEET in 2018, only one out of about eight will end up securing an MBBS/ BDS admission. The number of seats is higher in private colleges/ deemed universities.

One of the major reason for a candidate choosing a foreign destination is that the reservation makes the scenario even more gruesome for a general merit candidate as the number of seats for a general category student is very low. Also, the variation in cut-offs in various categories makes the playground uneven.

The cost of studying in private medical institutions in India is a major factor top. The higher tuition fees and hiked expenses in private institutions pose a greater burden on the candidates which is almost equal to the money spent on a medical degree abroad.

The only negative factor in students gaining admission abroad is that most institutions do not require any other academic qualifications other than the scores in the 10+2 final exam.In countries like the U.S., gaining admission to medical institutions is not as competitive as in India but is quite difficult too.According to the statistics, Indian candidates who obtain admission in some of the foreign institutes find it difficult to even complete the primary medical course.

Many candidates are unable to qualify the screening test for obtaining registration to practise medicine in the U.S. or Europe. This discourages foreign medical universities from accepting Indian aspirants.

One should agree that medical education should not be made available based only on funds. To complete medical education, one also requires academic excellence, hard work and perseverance.Hence, the selection has to be through a fair and open system.

As NEET is already regulating the entry of candidates into the field of medical education in India, it can be employed as an effective mechanism of filtering students for medical education abroad too. This also enables suitable candidates with academic competence and enduring capability to obtain admission to medical colleges abroad at the undergraduate level.
Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is mandatory for the ‘foreign’ doctor’s entry into India. But, for students who complete their graduate education abroad, FMGE is not necessary.\
