Analysis of B-School Rankings: A guide to choose the right college

One clears the tough MBA entrance tests and then goes through the grilling Selection process to get a seat in the college of their choice.
Now, here comes the most important and crucial part which is choosing the right college.
Though it seems easy but it is the one of the most difficult choices to make. Out of thousands of functional B-Schools in India which one will be the best one for you? This is the question which every aspirant asks.
There are many ways to find out the answer but the most used methodology is B-School Rankings.
Having said that, how does an aspirant know which MBA Ranking is the best or which one should be followed? Famous magazines and national dailies come up with B-School Rankings every year.
If it is that easy then why does it concern us? Main reason is that these rankings do not have same colleges in their top list. Every ranking differs from the other. Reason for this is that every survey incorporates different criteria to finalize the list.
Recently, Forbes Magazine, Financial Times, QS World, The Economist came up with their B-School rankings for the year 2013. Now all of these are very reputed and famous sources in themselves then how should one decide which one to follow because all of them have given different rankings to the same college.
For Example, Chicago, University of - Booth School of Business has been give the first rank in the survey conducted by The Economist while the same college is at 9th rank in QS World`s survey and Financial Times kept it at the 10th Rank.
To decipher this difference and come to the right conclusion one needs to analyze these surveys. There are many ways to do that.
1. One, is to go through all the possible Rankings and see if the college`s rank doesn`t show much fluctuation.
2. Second, is to know the basis of different Rankings and then see what suits you the best.
Let us elaborate by going through the criteria of the survey made:
Forbes – Does a calculation of ROI 5 years out from business school.
Financial Times – Bases 40% of the ranking on post-MBA salaries 3 years after graduation.
Business Week – Emphasises the satisfaction levels of two core stakeholders: students and recruiters.
The Economist – Assesses the ability of the MBA to open new career opportunities, as well as the international make-up of the school.
By relying on points like post-MBA salary, or subjective surveys and self-reported data, we can`t be scientifically conclusive. And a business school that has more of cash-strapped entrepreneurs and graduates taking non-profit sector will struggle to compete despite the positive social impact their career choices might have in the long term.
Therefore, one needs to prepare Rankings out of these Rankings. It will take a bit of your time but will fetch you the name of the college you should join.

IBPS PO Exam: Quantitative Aptitude: Averages- Study Material

Averages
The term Average refers to the sum of all observations divided by the total number of observations. Average is used quite regular in our day to day life. For example to calculate the average marks of the students, Average height of a particular group etc. The term average is also referred to as ‘Mean’. Basic formula to calculate the average is as follows:

Example. What is the average of First 10 Prime numbers?

Solution: First 10 Prime number are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29.
                  Hence, Average = {2+3+5+7+11+13+17+19+23+29} / 10
                                                = 129 / 10
                                                = 12.90
So, Average of First 10 Prime numbers is 12.90.
Example. The total number of sales visits made by a Salesman in the month of June is 90. What is the Average visit he makes per day?
Solution: Number of days in the month of June are 30
                  Hence, Average Visit per day = Number of total visits / Number of total days
                                                                        = 90 / 30
                                                                        = 3
So, the salesman makes 3 visits per day.

Solution. Speed of car
Ratio of speed of truck, car and train = 3 : 8 : 9
Now 8x = 80
∴ x = 10
Hence truck = 30 kmph.
Train = 90 kmph.
∴ Average speed of truck and train together
Ans: 2
2. The circumference of a circle is twice the perimeter of a rectangle. The area of the circle is 5544 sq cm. What is the area of the rectangle if the length of the rectangle is 40cm? (IBPS RRB Group ‘A’ Officers Exam 2012)
(1) 1120 sq cm
(2) 1020 sq cm
(3) 1140 sq cm
(4) 1040 sq cm

Solution. Area of circle
∴ r = 42
Circumference of circle = 2 ⤬ perimeter of rectangle
Or,
Or, perimeter of rectangle = 132 cm
Or, 2(l + b) = 132
l + b = 66
∴ b = 66 – 40 = 26
Area of rectangle = 40 ⤬ 26 = 1040 cm2 = 1040 sq.cm.

Admissions 2014: Criteria and Process @ SPJIMR Mumbai
To be eligible for SPJIMR Mumbai, an applicant has to have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university. Students in the final year of graduation can also apply. SPJIMR accepts CAT 2013, XAT 2014 and GMAT score (test taken from January 2011 onwards) as well. A total of 36 seats above the sanctioned intake are available for PIOs/OCIs and foreign nationals. The cut off percentile for the batch of 2013-15 at SPJIMR Mumbai was 92 for CAT 2012, 93 for XAT 2013 and 680 for GMAT.

CAT 2013 Day 8 Analysis: Quant moderate, LR Time consuming, Verbal easy

CAT 2013 Day 8 first session is over. Verbal section was easy but Logical Reasoning was time consuming. This article brings you the analysis of the first session.

Today was the day 8 of CAT 2013 exam.  The first session for Day 8, on October 25, got over this afternoon at 1.00 PM. MBAUniverse.com editorial team was present on many centers in New Delhi, Noida and spoke to students for their first reaction. As per the student’s feedback, Verbal section was easy but Logical Reasoning was time consuming. Students also said that Quantitative section was however Moderate in difficulty level in comparison to Verbal section.
Priya Singh said, “Quant was as per my expectation and was not much difficult. Verbal was very easy for me. I solved nearly all the question including RC passages.”
One of the test takers of CAT 2013 in Greater Noida, Anuj Yadav said, “All was fine except LR question sets. All the three sets in my paper were very calculation intensive and consumed a lot of my time. Otherwise I am happy with my paper.”
Let us have a look at the question types in the sections:
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation: Moderate
The Quantitative Ability area had maximum questions from Algebra followed by Geomtery and functions. Rests of the questions were from other usual topics such as Arithmetic, Trigonometry,   Mensuration, Time Speed & Distance, Number system, etc.
Data Interpretation area saw questions on Pie Chart , Venn diagram and Caselets and was termed as average in difficulty level by many students.
Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning: Easy & time consuming
The Verbal Ability questions were termed as easy by the candidates. Verbal Section covered questions from all topics like Reading Comprehension, Para Jumble, Vocabulary, Error correction in paragraph, identifying the Out of Context sentences. Passages were in between 600-650 words and were easy to understand with direct questions. 
The Logical Reasoning questions in CAT 2013 Day 8 were time consuming and calculation intensive. Questions sets were based on sequencing, blood relations and circular arrangements.
