About the CMC Vellore Entrance Exam 2012
CMC (Christian Medical College) Vellore is associated to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai and is one of the largest medical business centres in India. It conducts an all-India entrance test (CMC Vellore Common Entrance Test) every year to select students for admission into various under-graduate level medical and para-medical courses offered by it.

The following courses are offered at CMC Vellore:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing)
• Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT)
• Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT)

CMC Vellore Entrance Exam 2012 Pattern
The test basically comprises of multiple-choice objective type questions. The duration of the whole exam is 3 hours and 10 minutes. There would be 60 questions each from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (2 hours) and 120 questions in General Ability and Current Affairs (1 hour 10 minutes).
All candidates admitted to MBBS/BSc. Nursing/ BSc. MLT/BPT/BOT courses will have to undertake a service obligation, to work in an area of need for a period of two years after completion of training.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for different courses are different. However, there are some common eligibility criteria for all courses offered at CMC Vellore:
Common Eligibility Criteria for All Courses

• Candidates must have passed the final examination of the 10+2 system (or equivalent)conducted by Tamil Nadu state Board or any other equivalent examination.
• They should have cleared all the subjects of the HSCE exam.
• Candidates should be 17 years old at the time of admission.

MBBS

• In the last 2 years of their 12 years of study candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English.
• Candidates must have secured 60% marks at 10+2 level in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology taken together) and have an aggregate of 140/200 in these subjects, both at qualifying and competitive examinations.

B.Sc. Nursing

• Candidates must have secured an aggregate of 50% in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
• Only single women candidates are eligible to apply.

BOT/BPT/BSc. MLT

• Candidates should have passed the qualifying exam with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).

UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2012: Admission Notification

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will be conducting the “Engineering Services Examination 2012” on 15th June 2012.
The Engineering Services Examination is a combined competitive examination for recruitment to the Services/Posts under the following categories:
Category I—Civil Engineering
Category II—Mechanical Engineering
Category III—Electrical Engineering
Category IV—Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
The number of vacancies to be filled on the basis of the results of the Engineering Services Examination 2012 is expected to be approximately 560 including 47 PH (physically handicapped) vacancies.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2012

1. NATIONALITY:

A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

2. AGE LIMITS:

(a) A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st January, 2012 i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1982 and not later than 1st January, 1991.
(b) The upper age limit of 30 years will be relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government Servants.

3. MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

To be eligible to take the Engineering Services Examination 2012, you must have—
(a) obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or
(b) passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or
(c) obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/ College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or
(d) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or
(e) passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or
(f) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959.

4. PHYSICAL STANDARDS

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Engineering Services Examination, 2012 as per guidelines given in Appendix-II of the Rules for the Engineering Services Examination, 2012 published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 10th March 2012.

Candidates required to pay a fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees One hundred only) either by remitting the money in any branch of SBI by cash or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India/State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit card.

Exam Pattern of UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2012

The Examination shall be conducted according to the following plan:-

Part I
The Written Examination will comprise two sections:
Section I: consisting only of objective types of questions
Section II: consisting of conventional papers.
Both sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
Part II
Personality Test carrying a maximum of 200 marks for candidates who qualify the written examination.

Industry leaders discuss Marketing for Not for Profit Organizations @ BIMTECH Marketing Summit

Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), Greater Noida hosted Indian Marketing Summit on Friday, April 27, 2012 and Saturday, April 28, 2012. The theme of the Summit was, ‘Marketing for not for Profit Organizations in emerging Markets’. Prof. Jagdish Sheth explained the theme by saying, “Most of the Not-for-Profit organizations attach marketing with profit motive and selling. Therefore they refrain from it most often. This makes them miss out on many ways to create a sustainable enterprise.”

Dr. H Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH Greater Noida talked at length about Social Marketing and emphasized on sustainability and its importance in the long run. While quoting researchers Kasturi Rangan, Karim and Sandberg Dr. Chaturvedi said that conventional marketing methods were not always effective when used in social change.

Ms Cynthia Round, EVP, Brand Leadership, of United Way World Wide stressed that ‘trust’ is the most important factor, in context of Not for Profit Organizations. “World is facing a trust crisis.” She said. According to her, there was more trust amongst the Indian NGOs in comparison to the rest of the world. She also emphasized the need for the application of the concepts of ‘Brand strategic thinking’ in the social sector.

Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, founder, MART, mentioned that more than five per cent of India’s GDP goes to the support of development sector. He also shared the evolving concept of ‘Business Mind and Social Heart’ organizations. 

Prof. Jagdish Sheth, Founder AIM, discussed 4A’s of marketing with the perspective of social change. While sharing his thoughts he said “Most NfPs lacked the skills of marketing their offerings. He suggested that “the best way to encourage NfPs to use marketing is to take a customer service perspective instead of a marketer’s selling perspective.” He dwelt briefly on 4A’s of marketing for NfPs and equated Market Development to a combination of Market Accessibility, Market Accessibility, Market Affordability and Market Awareness.  The absence of any one of these factors would not lead to Market Development.

In the technical session with the theme ‘From Non Profit Organizations to Non Profit Marketing’, Ms. Cynthia Round equated Brand to a Relationship and stressed on the importance of significance of an organization in the lives of supporters.  Mr. Bill Toliver, Executive Director, The Matale Line, said that emotional marketing has a short life span.  It would appeal to the customer once and would get bypassed the second time. Marketing based on real cause without ulterior motives has the potential to stay for long.  Mr. Ian Correa of Hope foundation said that love and respect would engage and enable confrontation to solve a problem and a marriage of passion and professionalism would be a more lasting relationship.

The Day 2 of the Summit started with a session with the theme social marketing as a catalyst for development in emerging market. Dr. Alan Andreasen, Professor of Marketing, Mcdonough school of Business spoke about the different models which can be used by social enterprises to reach out to wider audience. He talked about his BCOS frame work wherein the emphasis was on the beneficiaries.

Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan , founder of Janagraha said that even the urban population has its pain points. His area of focus started with Bangalore his home town’s living conditions. “Each ward in a city has its budgets which is to be allocated for improving the civic conditions. So without rocking the boat too much, Janagraha started off with five per cent of the wards budget. The community involvement was started by asking people to act as “FOOLS”- fools courageous enough to want to change their cities civic conditions. It started off a s small movement but now it is reaching a humongous proportion of people.”

Mr. Kalyan Paul ED, Pan Himalyan Grassroots Development Foundation talked about how their model has helped many areas which were having water problems. He said the main issue right now is creating a second line of young people who can lead the next wave of social enterprise.

He said that attracting the best talent to this sector was a huge problem because of the costs involved in their education. Many of the passionate youth are not able to join because they bring with them a big baggage of education loans. He also exhorted the educational system to come out with a solution.

Mr. Anshul Gupta, Founder, Goonj talked about how the rural poor are facing the problem of even the basic necessities required for a dignified life. Everybody talks about basic needs of food, shelter and clothing, however, when we talk about different policies and issues on various forums, we ignore clothing most often. He quipped, “We don’t donate, we discard”.

The second session was on the theme ‘Emerging Digital Tools for Not for Profit Marketing’. This covered areas like Social media, Mobile Media and the next digital trends. Ms. Jennifer Elwood, ED, Red Cross talked about how the online experience for Red Cross was cumbersome, complex and inconsistent. She emphasized on the need of the art of story-telling for effective usage of social media marketing. She gave some relevant examples from Red Cross, US.

Ms. Jessie Pau, CEO, PaulWriter Strategic Services shared ‘ABCD’ model for marketing. This ABCD represents Added value, Behaviour change, Complexity and Diffusion respectively. She said it’s always a trade of between time & money. “If you don’t have money for advertisement then spend time to market”. She also said that the same tools used for commercial marketing can be used by social enterprise.

Ms. Saloni Malhotra, Founder, DesiCrew Solutions Private Limited, shared her experience of creating a local BPO and her experiments with social media in facilitating the business. She emphasized the fact that ‘The message and the medium both are equally important.

Check if your JEE sheets have been evaluated properly!

While IIT JEE results will be declared on May 18, 2012 students will be able to have a look at their answer sheets much before the actual results. For the first time ever, IIT JEE authorities have decided to upload the evaluated answer sheets of the IIT aspirants who took JEE that happened on April 08, 2012.
The answer sheets will be available online from May 05 to May 10, 2012 and students will be able to see for their any discrepancies in the evaluation of their sheets. Accordingly, they'll have the opportunity to lodge a request for discrepancy check.

Students can utilise this opportunity to submit requests for revision anytime before 5pm on May 10. The representatives will to consider the requests by the students and if found correct, the responses will be updated by May 14. IITD director, R Shevgaonkar said, "it may happen that the scanner does not pick up correct responses if a candidate has not filled the response bubble completely".
"In such a case, they can simply lodge a complaint and we will go through it before the preparation of the final merit list," he further said.

NIT Rourkela is #5 best universities in India

According to a new survey conducted by a global research group, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela proudly stands #5 among the best universities in India and 1067th rank in the world.
As per the ranking of world universities detailed by Cybermetrics lab, a Spain based international research group, NIT Rourkela occupied this position.
The cybermetric lab research group belongs to the Consijo Superior de investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. It looks at the qualitative analysis of the internet and web content especially those related to the process of generation and scholarly communication of scientific knowledge. This is a new discipline called Cybermetric.
NIT-Rourkela Director Sunil Kumar Sarangi in conversation with Economic Times said, “the ranking of NIT was a matter of great pride and profound honour for the entire NIT family, faculty, staff, students and to all others who helped us in our efforts to achieve this prestigious position".

DU to convert its 3-year undergraduate courses to 4 years from 2013

Delhi University (DU) is planning to extend the duration of its 3-year undergraduate courses to 4 years from 2013. Undergraduate courses such as BCom, BA and BSc will be restructured and extended to 4 years thus offering an option to quit the course midway with a choice to rejoin it later and complete the course.

Students will also get a choice to knock off 1 or 2 papers and instead of it use credits awarded through extracurricular activities or sports to complete the courses. So now students will get an opportunity to earn 3 degrees from a 4-year undergraduate program.

The university has proposed to introduce the 4-year courses from the academic session of 2013-14. This will be a transdisciplinary program with many exit options. The university is also revamping its open learning system where undergraduate students at colleges can finish a semester through open learning and the credits will be considered.

The DU administration revealed that the proposal is ready and consultations with stakeholders and teachers are ongoing. The administration is also planning to discuss the proposal at a teacher’s congress in June. After taking the inputs from teachers, the proposal will be presented at a teacher’s congress. Finally, administration will place the proposal before the executive and academic councils of the university.

The program will allow 2 exit options to the students during the entire course; one at the end of second and another at the end of third year. If a student opts out of the course after completing 2 years, he/she will be awarded an associate degree. At the end of 3 year, the students can opt to exit with a bachelor’s degree. If the student completes 4 years, he/she will be eligible for honours degree.

Even the students with 2-year associate degree will be given enough training to help them to become an elementary teacher. Students opting out after second and third years will get 10 years time to return and finish the course.

ISB proposes to hire bachelor degree holders as academic associates

ISB (Indian School of Business) has proposed to hire 3-year degree holders as research and academic associates. The objective is to groom large number of students for higher studies.

In general, ISB hires only those aspirants as academic and research associates who seek to pursue doctorate programs from overseas.   

Academic associates (AAs) are the scholars who help faculty in research and teaching while Research Associates (RAs) assist faculty in research work only.

Sources from ISB revealed that the institute is planning to hire bachelor degree holders in Statistics, Mathematics and Economics from premier colleges for the positions of AAs and RAs.

Presently only post graduate students or those having 4-year degree are hired for the program.

The institute hires these candidates through campus hiring from IIMs and IITs. Each of these associates work with a faculty member.

The post graduate aspirants are required to take GRE or GMAT test and apply for PhD in the fall of second year and at the end of their second year they leave for their PhD.

The 3-year degree holders will be required to apply at the fall of their third year.

The number of positions for AAs and RAs depend on the number of faculty members at ISB. The institute also pays salaries to these associates.

IGNOU likely to introduce common curriculum for all open universities

IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is taking initiatives to come up with a common curriculum for all open universities (OU) across the country. The initiative has been taken to fulfill the national objective set by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to impart quality education while increasing the GER (gross enrolment ratio) in higher studies.

A meeting of all Vice-chancellors of all Open Universities was arranged by IUC (Inter University Consortium) of IGNOU to discuss the plan for devising a common curriculum for open and distance learning. To ensure that the MHRD agenda is fulfilled, the officials decided to have a 3-pronged strategy.

The proposal would include devising a common syllabus for bachelor degree courses, create an open education resource accessible to all through a web site and producing curriculum based multi-media e-content.

Sources from MHRD revealed that all open universities must partner to improve the GER across India. Moreover, focus should be on teacher training, faculty development and research activities in universities. Through the program, IUC aims at experimenting with technology at the universities and thoughtfully utilizing both technology and media for distance learning education.

Initially, a common curriculum can be formulated for 3 UG programs. A common syllabus will be implemented throughout all OUs. In addition, emphasis will be given on using new technology while teacher training.

The program is a part of the 12^th Five Year Plan which involves developing a national vocational education framework and generating employable human resources.

Foreign B-schools set out without AICTE approval

Amidst political uncertainty and the sluggish passage of the Foreign Educational Institutions Bill, foreign institutions remain undeterred in establishing their campuses on the Indian soil.

While the Bill lies stagnant in the parliament for almost two years, MISB Bocconi, a Milan-based international B-School has chosen Powai, Maharashtra as its location for the Indian campus. Without seeking approval from All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the approving authority for technical institutes across India to run their courses, the school has reportedly started admissions to its two-year PG programmes in Mumbai assuring students of a degree from its parent Milan campus.

On the other hand, a Canada-based Schulich School of Business is preparing to open a campus in Hyderabad in September, 2013. Even though, the relevant legislation may not be in place when Schulich's campus opens next year, students will complete one semester of their two-year MBA program in Toronto and be awarded with Canadian degrees until India is ready with regulations. According to a news report earlier this month, minister for human resource development, Kapil Sibal, had exhorted the parliament to speed up the passage of the bill.

Another foreign institute among the undeterred new entrants in India is Fazlani Altius Business School (FABS), which has launched three campuses in Mumbai (Powai), Delhi and Bhubaneswar last week. The school is expected to start its admission for MBA (applied HR) and MBA (sales and marketing) courses from May 15. "All sales and marketing students will get job offers on Day 1 of admission," said Ashfaq Ahad, co-founder of FABS as per media reports, where he also added that the AICTE approval is not required, however, the school has got the UGC's approval.

CBSE on alert, cheaters beware!

NAGPUR: Mobile phone jammers, fingerprint scanners, spy camera blockers etc are gadgets which might be commonplace on the shopping list of a spy agency, but now there is an unlikely buyer on the block - CBSE.
With big ticket competitive exams under its aegis, the central board wants to provide the highest level of security for its centres and is scouting for experienced firms to provide and run the set-up. A pilot version of this project will be undertaken at select centres across the country on May 13, during the final All India Pre-Medical/Dental Test (AIPMT).
CBSE wants to ensure that no form of malpractice occurs during the competitive exams which it conducts. Currently the board is conducting the common entrance tests (CET) for engineering, medical, CBSE teachers etc. From next year onwards, the CBSE will also be responsible for the newer versions of medical and IIT/engineering exams which will greatly increase the number of candidates.
The central board plans to put portable mobile phone jammers at its centres which will completely block not only voice transmissions, but also Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. They are also looking for gadgets that will block spy cameras from being used and disable a specified bandwidth. All these gadgets will be able to run on battery as well, in case there are problems in accessing the electric points.
For accurate candidate verification, the board plans to use a portable fingerprint scanner and camera. Once the candidate is seated at the centre, a designated person will bring the portable fingerprint scanner inside the room. Two fingers of the candidate will be scanned and a picture taken, to be later merged in the database alongside the roll number. This multi-step verification process will ensure that no fake candidate appears for the competitive exams.
For the project's dry run scheduled for May 13, the CBSE has selected 10 cities in the country and Mumbai is the only one from Maharashtra. In a letter to prospective security service providers, the CBSE has mentioned that a maximum of 30,788 students will be present in the centres where the pilot project will be implemented. In Mumbai specifically, 409 students will be appearing at the specified centre and the service provider will have to be ready with that level of infrastructure.
While this is just the first step, the CBSE is well aware of the magnitude of competitive exams it conducts. The current enrolment for AIEEE is 11.64 lakh (both online and offline) and will go higher once the single CET is implemented next year. Around 7.8 lakh had enrolled for the Central Teachers Eligibility Test (CTET) this year, and 2.75 lakh had registered for the AIPMT prelims. To provide security infrastructure on that scale will be an uphill task for any firm which bags the contract and also for CBSE, which will be in the firing line if anything does go wrong.

From next year, AIEEE and IIT JEE will be replaced by Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test (ISEET).

UGC Net goes all objective

The National Eligibility Test conducted by University Grants Commission, better known as UGC NET is scheduled to be held this June 24th, 2012. Starting this year, UGC NET will be completely objective.

Also, the paper will have no negative marking and the candidates will be allowed to carry the carbon printout of optical mark recognition (OMR) response sheets with them after the examination.

Till last year Paper III was objective, but starting 2012, all three papers will be objective in nature.

NET is conducted as an entrance to test eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for teaching profession and research. "The commission has decided to change the pattern of examination. All the three papers will be objective and will be held on the same day in two separate sessions. The syllabus, though, for all the three papers remains the same as that of the previous year," said Surender Singh, deputy secretary (NET), UGC.

Eligibility for OBC Students Relaxed in Delhi University

Students of the other backward classes (OBC) category, seeking admission in Delhi University (DU) this year, have reason to cheer. The university is all set to slash eligibility criteria across all courses for candidates applying under the OBC category. The eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates, however, will stay at 33%.

“For all those OBC candidates who are opting for Journalism, we have relaxed the eligibility criteria for them. While the eligibility criteria for general category students will be 60%, , the criteria for OBC students will be 54% and those for SC/ ST students will be 33% — which is the basic passing marks for Class 12 exams” said Tarjeet Sabharwal, convener of the Common Journalism Entrance Test (CJET 2012) admissions committee.

Colleges also claim that this is being done to give a fillip to OBC admissions, since several seats across numerous courses remained vacant last year.

“This is being done across the university in order to boost the student intake for the reserved category. Lower eligibility criteria will motivate many such students to actively come and apply for admissions,” added Sabharwal.

Last year, there had been a flat 10% reduction in the OBC criteria.

“This year it is going to be 10% less of the general category criteria. This means that if the cut off for general category is 60%, for OBC students it will be 10% of 60%, that is 60 minus 6, which is 54%,” said SK Garg, chairperson, DU’s high-powered committee.

Some professors, however, did not think that the relaxation in eligibility criteria would fill up the vacant seats in some of the humanities courses.

“This is not likely to boost OBC intake in some courses such as political science, history, mathematics or statistics,” said a professor at  Lady Shri Ram College.

“For a girls’ college, there are fewer OBC women applicants. Those who do apply want to study economics or b.com because they translate into jobs more easily. So seats in the other courses will anyway be left vacant despite the relaxation in the eligibility criteria,” the professor added.

New IITs can award engineering degrees now

In a recent passed by Parliament on Monday, the new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) now can grant engineering degrees to pass outs.
Passed by Rajya Sabha by voice vote on Monday, the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010, was passed along with the National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010.
As per this recent amendment, Indian Institutes of Technology in Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, Ropar and Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) make it to the list of IITs and can now grant engineering degrees to students.
