The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has been in the news ever since the exam got over on April 11, for the errors that occurred this year. However, in a move that may spell the end of the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), a committee comprising of directors of all IITs is planning a single national-level entrance examination for Engineering in India.
If the proposal is accepted, not only would it mean the end of IIT-JEE but also every other individual entrance tests such as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (aieee) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (cbse).
It is believed that because students have to appear for individual entrance examinations for various institutes, they are under a lot of pressure. This calls out for a need to have a single commonentrance test for all engineering institutes.
A flaw in the current entrance procedure is that engineering aspirants focus more on preparing for entrance examinations and do not put enough effort into preparing for their Class XII examinations as the latter is not taken into consideration for admission into various engineering colleges.

In this years IIT-JEE , there were three errors in the papers. And officials have announced that all steps will be taken to rectify them. The subject heads of physics and maths were interchanged in the physics and math section in ORS (objective response sheet). However, the serial numbers of the questions and ORS were in order. In the Hindi version, code four, question 44 was missing. Further, in section IV of paper I, the English version correctly said each row carries 2 marks, while the Hindi version said each question carries three marks. However, no student will suffer due to the misprints in the question paper. It has been declared that whichever way it will be done, will be announced. The procedures followed either before the results are prepared or before the final results are declared.

It was a real testing time for the students, who appeared for IIT-JEE 2010 on Sunday because the order of the subjects on the question paper did not match the sequence on the answer sheet which proved to be a major headache for the students.

The officials gave a clarification in no time but it was impossible to cover all the 1,026 centers across the country at the same time.

Now that the most searched after entrance is over the students are eying for the solutions and probable cut-off for IIT-JEE 2010. The solution to the IIT-JEE paper can be viewed at various IIT-JEE coaching websites.

Mumbai: The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will see more students aspiring to get into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year. Around 4.72 lakh aspirants across the country will appear for the exam on April 11 as compared to last year’s 3,84,977 candidates.

The highest number of candidates this year are from the IIT Bombay zone (80,211), followed by IIT Delhi (73,862), IIT Kanpur (73,194), IIT Madras (68,500), IIT Roorkee (61,233), IIT Kharagpur (60,834) and IIT Guwahati (54,269). Around 1.08 lakh Other Backward Classes (OBCs, non-creamy layer) have registered for the exam, while 44,000 Scheduled Caste (SC) and 16,936 Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates will attempt JEE.

The total number of seats available across all IITs, IT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad is 10,000. Of the 15 IITs, the seven older ones are implementing the final phase of the 27% OBC reservation this year. There will be two papers of three-hour duration each.Both papers will comprise three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The IITs are introducing an online counselling process this year. It is open to all candidates who qualify JEE. Instead of coming physically to an IIT, general category will have to log in and fill in their choice of course and IITs. Even OBC/SC/ST/PD candidates can fill their choices online, but they will have to come to the IITs with necessary certificates for verification. The courses and their scope will be put on the website.

Furthermore, in the second round of admissions this year, students will be allowed to move across all 15 institutes, unlike in 2009. The IITs had started a second round of admissions in 2009 to fill vacant seats after round one. Students could accordingly upgrade their choice if a seat was still vacant, but it was limited to the IIT where the student had gained admission to. This year, they can get the higher choice in other IITs too, subject to vacancy.
