IIM -C hikes fee by 50 percent

IIM -C hikes fee by 50 percent

When the government provides all financial assistance for the development of Indian Institutes of Management, why fees were frequently hiked and the students are being charged lakhs of rupees? This has become the major concern at this period of time. The fee hike at all major IIMs is leading to commercialisation of education.
With 50 pc jump, IIM-C’s two-year programme to cost Rs 13.5 lakh. The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) has increased the fees for its two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme from the current Rs 9 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh from the 2010 batch onwards.
The latest fee hike by nearly 50 per cent is one of steepest ever in the institute’s history. Earlier, the institute had refrained from the hike and insisted that it (fees hike) was not a “make or break” issue for IIM-C, the oldest IIM in the country. In February 2009, the institute had increased its fees from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 9 lakh. In 2010, the institute was supposed to admit about 464 students, the largest intake across IIMs. On account of shortage of faculty and infrastructure, the institute, however, restricted its intake to 375.
With the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata and Bangalore announcing a fee hike from the coming academic session, IIM, Kozhikode, will also take up the issue for a detailed discussion during its next board meeting.
