MBBS IN MAHARASHRTRA – 70:30 COMES TO
AN END
The National Eligibility cum Entrance exam,
having been postponed for so long since Covid-19 shook the nation, is finally
being conducted on the 13th of September, 2020 with over 15.97 lakhs
registering for the pen and paper-based exam. The announcement of the exam has
been followed by another remarkable news –
Medical education minister, Amit Deshmukh
brought good news to students and medical aspirants of Maharashtra as it
announces the end of 70:30 region wise allocation for the upcoming National
Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET) results. The announcement was made at the
state assembly, providing equal and fair opportunity to all. The regional disparity
in admissions has always been a huge part of admissions in Maharashtra and
continues for admissions in all other fields.
In the words of Amit Deshmukh, it will be
“one Maharashtra, one merit”.
To those unaware about the 70:30 ratio of
admissions, it implies reservation for 70% locals (students from the same
district as the college), while only 30% of its admissions would be available
for the rest of the state. Scrapping this rule has been suggested and argued
for by many students and parents all across Maharashtra for quite a long down
in the field of medicine.
The new system is believed to be fairer and
more just as it allows meritorious students with an opportunity to get into the
colleges of their choices. Time to put your all into NEET now onwards – that
will be the only entry ticket to desired colleges and not geographical
privilege!
While the pandemic has brought about a lot
of changes, students and parents need not worry and only focus on performing
their best at the examinations. NTA has taken adequate measures to maintain
social distancing, increasing the number of centres from 2,456 to 3,843 while
the number of candidates per room have been pushed down from 24 to 12. Hand
sanitizers have been made accessible at the entrance and inside the examination
hall at all times, installing barcode readers instead of checking admit cards
and much more.
After all, the worthy and deserved will
always win, and we can’t let coronavirus stop us!
