MBBS IN USA: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE

MBBS IN USA: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE

 THE VERY FIRST DAYS –

Building a foundation from a younger age is essential, especially considering the amount of competition there is in the field of medical sciences. Don’t worry if you’re opting out late, you just have to work really hard. At a young age, there are some things that are both mandatory and quintessential to a strong foundation.

1.      Know your passions: MBBS should not be opted for just because someone gets high marks in their science subjects in high school. In fact, no career path should be chosen this way. Until and unless and you really love Biology, clearing the examinations and studying in Europe would be like running behind a unicorn.

2.      Intense Research: The fact that you stumbled upon this article in itself explains that you perhaps are up to research. However, what you also need to research is what it takes to be a doctor and what it’s like to be one. It is important to make a connect between your personality and your career since it’s going to be your pursuit for the rest of your life.

3.      Choose Subjects Wisely: Since we’re talking about the early years, it is fairly evident that the students need to opt for science subjects in their 11th and 12th grades. Choosing Biology in a senior year is mandatory, while having studying science elaborately throughout your education helps.

4.      Cracking NEET: The National Entrance cum Examination Test is a combination of Physics, Chemistry and Biology required to be taken and students who have finished school or are finishing it the same year and wish to study the medical sciences.

THE PREREQUISITES –

Almost everyone is generally aware of the basic pre-requisites of graduating from schools and having an English proficiency certificate, but the most recent change that has been brough about is clearing NEET, which was only limited to students wanting to study in India earlier.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) released a verdict mid-2018, making NEET mandatory for students who wished to study medicine in foreign years and was made effective 2019 onwards. The purpose behind mandating an India-based exam for international application was because many Indian candidates found it incredible arduous to even complete the primary medical course or qualify the screening tests required to practice medicine in those countries after having been admitted into their universities.

The system was built to regulate the flow of candidates, ensure only the worthy and deserving were admitted and to also inculcate the required hard work to clear a medical exam.

The NEET results have been valid for 3 years from its date of declaration, giving a time frame window for students to be able to apply to foreign universities within that period or taking the exam again.

MBBS IN USA

An eligibility criterion, after having cleared NEET, is to clear the Medical College Admission Test or MCAT in the USA in order to get a medical education. However, taking an MCAT and being awarded the title of a doctor in USA is not as simple as taking NEET, there are certain other prerequisites required.

MCAT cannot be cleared right after schooling, i.e., a 10+2 certification. Students have to through a preliminary medical education in organic chemistry and life sciences/ general biology/ zoology, which is properly known as pre-med. The path to a medical course right after schooling is to clear SAT/ACT post 12th grade to be admitted into a pre-med course. However, it is heavily recommended that students study their Bachelor’s in India after clearing NEET, and directly apply for an MCAT to enrol in America’s four years of medical school.

MCAT generally has a frequency of around 10-15 times/year, providing students multiple opportunities; and provides more than 1.5 minute per question. MCAT, although having an easier application of physics, also evaluates students on Psychology, Sociology, and Critical and Analytical Skills other than mainstream science. The exam is structured in a way where students have to analyse and fetch answers from passages, unlike those in India.

Additional complications include proper licensing and effective practice of medicine. To be able to practice medicine in the US, irrespective of your country of study, graduates then need to clear the United States Medical Licensing Examinations, or USMLE. The US Medical framework being largely different from Indian medical education makes it incredibly difficult to clear USLME for a student having studied in India.

PATHWAYS

There are certain different pathways that students can opt for in order to obtain their medical education or becoming a doctor in the USA.

1.      Pathway One

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Clearing NEET

-        Obtaining a Bachelor’s in Medicine in India

-        Clearing USMLE and obtaining a license

A challenge posed is the different education base of India and America, as a consequence of which, most students fail to clear USMLE through this pathway. However, students are eligible for taking Step 1 of the exam right after 2nd year providing students more time. If a student clears USLME Step 2 after 5th year of MBBS to practice in USA as a Foreign Medical Graduate after attaining an H-1 B visa.

2.      Pathway Two

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Clearing SAT/ACT

-        Taking a pre-med course in the US

-        Clearing MCAT

-        Taking a course in MD in the US

A pre-med course is ideally composed of 1 year of Chemistry, 1 year of Biology and 1 year of Physics, along with majors, electives and minors. This pathway generally has a lower academic load and easier to crack through but unpopular for the high costs of staying in the US for this long.

3.      Pathway Three

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Clearing NEET

-        Taking a B.Sc. course in India

-        Preparing for MCAT alongside the course

-        Clearing MCAT

-        Taking an MD course in the US

Self-studying can also be incredibly challenging; thus, this isn’t a popular pathway. However, that does not imply that it’s intangible.

4.      Pathway Four

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Clearing NEET

-        Take a medical course in India

-        Clear MCAT in after 2nd year of the medical course

-        Attend MD in the US

5.      Pathway Five

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Take a medical course in India

-        Clear MCAT in after finishing MBBS in India

-        Attend MD in the US

6.      An Unconventional Path

-        Schooling in science and math (class 10th)

-        Higher schooling in physics, chemistry, and biology (class 12th)

-        Clearing NEET

-        Taking admission in Caribbean IS till Bachelor’s level (MCAT not required)

-        Take the USMLE Step 1 Exam

-        Complete MD in the USA

-        Take USMLE Step 2 exam

-        Attain residency and practice in the USA
