MBA is one of the most popular courses in the present world. Also, admission for MBA courses has more competition, just because it is popular. In the admission entrance, group discussion has inevitable role, along with all other test papers. Generally the group discussions will be organized by all MBA colleges, including IIMs, soon after the results of CAT is out. It will usually come in February, every year. How MBA GD-PI is carried out?

  • For GD, the candidates will be divided into various groups, in random. Every group will have about 6-25 participants.

  • For every group, they will allot one topic for discussion. All candidates should convey their viewpoints related to that topic. The candidates will get 15-20 minutes for speaking. Also, the candidates can choose whether to favor the topic or not. 

  • The candidates will be judged by the panel, based on various elements, in between the GD process. The elements include – idea on the topic, knowledge, speaking manner, confidence level and various other aspects.


 Tips for preparing for MBA Group Discussion

GD/PI play vital role in selection process for MBA courses. It has the capacity to modify the rank lists entirely. You can crack GD with good and vast preparation. Here are some tips for improving your preparation for GD/PI.

  • Update your knowledge in current topics

  • Vast reading on different topics

  • Improve public speaking skills, to have confidence to appear

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) is a university located in Dehradun. The university now had declared its schedule for admission 2022-23. The admission for MBA in the university will be carried through entrance test, known as UPES Management Entrance Test (UPESMET). This is an aptitude test conducted for selecting eligible candidates for MBA for each academic year.

Eligibility criteria for MBA in UPES


The admission for MBA in UPES will be held based on filtering process in different stages like– CMAT 2021, UPESMET and interview/ group discussion. About 30% of the seats will be occupied on the basis of national level exams like CAT or XAT. The basic eligibility criteria for MBA admission includes-

  • Exemption from UPESMET – candidates who secure above 70% score in Management Aptitude Test (MAT) or Common Management Admission Test (CMAT), 2021 will be directly selected for attending interview and group discussion. They do not need to come through UPESMET.

  • 50% or above score - in Common Admission Test (CAT) or Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT). 

  • 400 or above marks in Graduate Management Admission test (GMAT)

  • 120 or above marks in NMIMS Management Aptitude test (NMAT)

IIFT 2022 is scheduled to be convened on December 5. The IIFT question paper is divided into Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Analysis, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning and General Awareness (GK).


In topper's suggestions students should focus on giving the mock tests and undergo self analysis. Also more attention should be given on already prepared subjects. Going through the previous year IIFT question papers and analyzing the paper pattern should be considered as an important part of exam preparation.

Pattern of IIFT Exam 2022-


The IIFT question paper is consist of four sections- 


  • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

  • Quantitative Analysis

  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning

  • General Awareness (GK)


The Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

consists of a total of 35 questions.Quantitative Analysis section had 25 questions.Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning contains 30 questions. General Awareness (GK) has a total number of 20 questions.

In the first three sections 3 marks will be awarded for each of the right answers. While for general awareness (GK) section 1.5 marks will be given for each right answer.


Guidelines for the day of the entrance examination- IIFT.


  • Do not forget to carry the admit card to the exam centre.

  • Punctuality is a must,try to be on time at the examination centre.

  • Do not forget to carry the requisite documents.

  • Never panic after seeing the question paper, calmly solve it by maintaining your focus.

  • Time should be managed properly.
