HOW TO PICK YOUR UNIVERSITY ABROAD

HOW TO PICK YOUR UNIVERSITY ABROAD

With the advancement of the world, various streams of education have opened up. Choosing the right Bachelors or Masters degree from the buffet of options is a difficult task in itself, let alone deciding which programme to opt for when you dream of studying abroad.

Making a well-informed decision is very important. The explosion of opportunity is huge, but you have to start somewhere soon. Thinking about the following factors can help you work out what is best for you.

1.) DISCIPLINE YOU DESIRE

You always have an idea about the course you want to study. The tricky part is to choose the place that is best suited for you. You may find many places offering programmes that are unconventional or are the ones you never have heard of before. On the other hand, you may want to think of the programmes that can guarantee you jobs after graduation. In that case you must have a look at some of the well-known disciplines offered by the top destinations, like:

·       Finance in France

·       Public Health in U.K.

·       Marketing in Spain

·       Economics in Germany

·       Health Science in the U.S.

2.) THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR YOU

Everyone has a bunch of ideas in their mind when they think about a destination they want to study. A good way to decide the perfect place to study is to do some research, keeping in mind all the important aspects, such as, the best cities or the countries that offer your desired discipline, the facilities, the faculties and alumni of the university, the living cost, weather, transportation etc.

If geography is the main thing in your mind while choosing you can narrow down the options by researching other factors, like, financial options, career opportunities or application requirements.

While researching you can use words like:

·       Student cities in Asia

·       Student cities in North America

·       Student cities in U.K.

3.) USE THE BEST SEARCH ENGINES FOR INTERNATIONAL DEGREES

Given the fact that there are various major as well as minor factors that must be considered while making the decision on your desired university, a careful and thorough knowledge of all the options is highly required. This can be a very lengthy and tiring job. To overcome this, you have to work smart rather than working hard and use a well-informed professional platform, which can rather be an individual or a certified website.

4.) INTERNATIONAL RANKING OF UNIVERSITY

Another way to come to a decision is to ask, “Which are the best universities?” Easy enough, right? But things aren’t as simple. There are several trusted organizations that use various ranking systems.

They draw a hierarchy of different universities based on their data, taking into consideration factors, including the academic and educational performance, teaching environment or the internationality of the institution. The major ranking systems are:

·       Times Higher Education World University Rankings

·       Shanghai University Academic Ranking World Universities

·       QS World University Rankings

·       S. News Global Universities Rankings

Non-official Rankings like the one on Wikipedia also gives an idea of the international presence of the university, among potential students.

5.) AFFORDABILITY OF DEGREES

Money is the first thing in mind when you want to start anything, and it is no secret that higher education, that too in abroad is going to put a hole in your pocket. While researching, you have to focus on the overall expense which includes, the fee structure of the available programmes, living cost (rent, food etc.) and cost on transportation. There are universities that offer programmes with low or no tuition fees as well as there are some universities that will offer you the best degree, but for a substantial amount of money.

Cost can most certainly make or break a deal. So, you can consider the following:

·       Tuition fees and living costs in Denmark

·       Tuition fees and living costs in Netherlands

·       Tuition fees and living costs in U.S.A.

·       Tuition fees and living costs in Australia

6.) FIND OUT OTHERS EXPERIENCE

Finding out experiences of the students that has previously been in the same position as you can be really helpful. It can clear any doubt you have about study programmes and universities. You can get to learn about these experiences by talking to the students you know individually, reading reviews of the students on verified web sites or even watching videos online. You can also get their insights on how to deal with all the challenges, misconceptions and cultural shocks that they faced.

How to Stay in USA after education

How to Stay in USA after education

It is quite prestigious getting an opportunity to get certified from The UnitedStates of America, isn’t it?

But one surely doesn’t fancy leaving the country after their graduation because, agree or not, it is a harbour of development and scope for an individual.

So how can you ensure their stay and citizenship after your F-1 visa (visa for students valid until completion of the course) and OPT visa (visa that allows temporary employment in the field of graduation) have expired?

Basically, you can extend you stay in the US by applying for an OPT extension or a STEM OPT extension to their F-1 visa. Rules may seem difficult to international students but F-1 visa extension can help.

HOW EXACTLY CAN ONE LEGALISE THEIR STAY IN THE US AFTER GRADUATING?

During your graduation, CPT (curricular practical training) allows you to seek employment along with studies whereas the OPT (optional training practise) allows you to work for a 12- month period after graduation. Some people may have used their OPT during graduation. They can apply for extension post-completion OPT. Those who have studied science, technology, engineering or mathematics(STEM) can extend visas through STEM OPT extension.

HOW AND WHEN DOES ONE APPLY?

Your DSO (Designated school office) must send a petition for OPT into the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System(SEVIS) at least 90 days before you fill the form. There are two forms for visa extension – I-765 and request for post-completion OPT.

After your DSO has requested the OPT, you have 30 days to fill the form. The DHS releases due dates and timelines for OPT filling through a post-completion OPT planning tool. Then a 60-day time is provided to fill out the I-765 form. One must make sure that the OPT must start within 60 days of completion of the course i.e. the grace period provided after graduation.

The total fees for the forms is around $495. Following are the steps for OPT extension process:

a.     Ask your DSO to send an OPT request to SEVIS and fill the I-20 form provided by your DSO)

b.     Fill out an application for employment authorisation card (I-765 form), also called work permit.

c.      Submit the extension form and fees and all documents via mail or electronically.

d.     Reply to any request for evidence by the UNCIS and keep track of deadlines.

e.     Receive your approval.

Originally, this process doesn’t demand any jobs. However, your job must be related to your field whenever you get one.

HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE APPROVAL?

Its takes 80-120 days on an average for a person to receive their approval. However, this time period has increased with increasing work load on the system due to a 400% rise in international students from 2016-18 as reported by data and survey.

HOW CAN I EXTEND MY STAY WHEN OPT EXPIRES?

You can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the completion of your OPT. However, apply no sooner that 90 days prior to your current OPT end date. Students with a STEM degree (i.e. pursuing science, technology, engineering or mathematics) may apply for a STEM visa.

Your employer during the OPT period must fulfil the following requirements:

a.     The employer must be a part of the USCIS E-verify employment eligibility verification program.

b.     The employer must be willing to sponsor your request.

c.      The employer must provide you with 20 hours of work per week.

d.     You should have formal training to meet your goals.

People who didn’t study in STEM fields aren’t eligible for this process and must leave the US after their grace period is over.

WORKING WITH A H-1B VISA:

A H-1B visa is permit that allows employers to temporarily hire foreign applicants after their practical training is over. Now, if you are switching between F-1 and H-1B visas, you are eligible for the cap-gap extension which is basically a permit to legally stay from the end of OPT period (1 April) till the start of H-1B ( 1 October). You are eligible to apply for cap-gap extension if

1.     Your employer has filed a H-1B petition

2.     You have a F-1 visa status

3.     You are in an authorised period of post completion OPT.

Many people also apply for green card after H-1B visa to gain permanent citizenship.

MUST DO’S TO ENSURE YOUR VISA:

1.     Avoid delays in filling out forms and try to meet deadlines.

2.     Inform your DSO in case of change in contact or address details.

3.     Keep yourself updated for any changes can happen in OPT rules. Visit official websites DHS.gov or USCIS.gov for updates.

Academic Transcripts

Academic Transcripts

The confusion around the word “Transcript” is fairly justified due to the presence of different types of qualifications and certifications out there. This article will try to discuss all the nuances associated with the Transcripts and will try to answer several questions including :

Where to find or get a Transcript from?

When and why a Transcript is required?

      How to use a Transcript?

Introduction

A transcript serves as proof that one attended the given institute and acquired the necessary education. It is issued by the institute and contains scores obtained in various courses.

Transcripts are often known by various other names which often leads to a lot of confusion. To put your mind at ease we have assembled a list of common names which are often used in place of the word “transcripts”:

      Mark Sheet

      Mark List

      Academic Certificates

      Cumulative Record File (CRF)

      Permanent Record

      Transcript of Records (ToR)

      Report Card

      Diploma Supplement

      Academic Record

      Statement of Learning

      Record of Achievement

All the aforementioned words are synonyms of each other. and mainly serve as proof that one has completed the education from a given institute.

The distinction between Degree, Diploma, and Transcripts

Transcripts, degrees, certificates and diplomas all serve as proof of completion of education. However, transcripts are different from all of them.

Diploma/Degree/Certificate: These are the documents that are issued after the completion of a degree/diploma and contain no detail about the score secured by the student in various subjects. The type of certificate issued, however, depends on the type of degree/diploma.

Transcript: It is a mark sheet that includes a learner’s academic records. It consists of the courses/subjects taken by the student, grades received against each column, the awards and the student’s achievements. It also includes the degree awarded to the student.

Content covered in a transcript

A transcript must contain a list of courses taken by the student and the grades/marks secured by the student in those courses.

Other than that, the transcript also incorporates the following information:

      Student’s full name

Institute’s full name along with its location

Board name or University name for college education.

      Complete name of the course.

Subject-wise scores/marks obtained by the student every semester.

Additionally, the transcript may or may not contain the following information:

The overall grade received by the student for the entire academic course/year

The total number of students in the class (overall strength of the class to compare where a particular student ranks)

The average grade of the class to specify where a particular student stands.

Note: A transcript must contain the institute’s stamp to make it a legitimate document.

The Need and Use of Transcripts for students

Academic transcripts or transcripts of record (ToR) are needed when a student applies to a different college within the nation or abroad. ToR is accepted as proof for completion of a degree/diploma.

When students apply to foreign colleges they need to attach a copy of ToR along with other required documents. Some colleges may require you to send a hard copy of the ToR. However, a soft copy must always be kept so that one can apply quickly to these colleges.

Which Transcript is needed for which course?

The type of transcripts required varies according to the level of education. For a graduate school in foreign colleges, an undergraduate transcript is required. Whereas, for an undergraduate degree, a secondary school certificate is required.

In some cases, universities may ask for transcripts from the last 2 educational qualifications. Requirements of the universities are often specified on their university websites.

Note: If you are in your final year and don’t have your final ToR, you should take the help of your provisional/interim mark sheet. Do keep in mind that the latest mark sheets must be used for this purpose.

Note: In addition to ToR, some colleges may also require backlog certificates which indicate if you have any backlog. Backlog can seriously affect your application at some universities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How to get your transcript?

The transcripts are usually issued by the board or institute and can be obtained by visiting the college or contacting the authorities and requesting them to send your transcript via post.

     2.  What to do if I lost my transcript?

It’s better to be cautious with your transcript as it is difficult to acquire a copy since the original transcript is issued by the institute. But the students who lost their ToR should try asking the institute officials for a duplicate copy.

    3.  What to do if my transcript is not in English?

In such cases, students can often demand a translated copy of their transcripts. Both copies must be signed by the authorities. Some colleges may ask for both copies.
