ALL 19,355 STUDENTS COACHED BY TAMIL NADU GOVERNMENT FAIL TO GET MEDICAL SEAT

ALL 19,355 STUDENTS COACHED BY TAMIL NADU GOVERNMENT FAIL TO GET MEDICAL SEAT

The state government reveals the most shocking news regarding the first phase of medical counselling of 19,355 students coached at the state sponsored NEET training centres. No one among these students is able to secure a medical seat.
There were 412 VSAT centres opened all around the state as joint project between the school education department and speed medical institute. The main purpose was to train the students of government and government aided schools to crack NEET. Around 2747 students were selected for the residential coaching located different places including Chennai and Kancheepuram.
As per the information of the last year there were 3 students from government schools and 4 from the government aided schools who were able to secure a MBBS seats in the medical colleges. Bharathazhvar who lives in the Virudhunagar district says that “My son has decided to prepare for exam one more year. The cut-off for the SC category in the government medical colleges was 474 seats.” Uma Shankar son of Bharath Hvar is one of the toppers in the government aided schools and had scored 440 marks in NEET 2019. However, there is increase in the students who have scored more than 300 marks in NEET this year.
Last year, there were around 10 students last year who were able to score more than 300 marks in the NEET, whereas this year 32 students are able to score more than 300 marks in the NEET 2019.  There are around more than 2000 students who have qualified the exam this year which is higher than last year where only 1333 students were able to clear exam.
The main reason for higher cut offs for all the categories this year is repeat test takers. Due to this many student managed to score more than 400 marks are not able to secure a medical seat in the college. It makes it more difficult for the students from the government schools to secure their seats in the government colleges as stated by the officials.
It is a matter of concern as last year on September 15, 2018 the school education minister KA Sengottaiyan set a target that 500 seats must be secured by the students of the government and government aided schools. But surprisingly no student has been able to get a medical seat in first round of counselling.
There can be many reasons behind this poor result. As per the sources “State government was not interested in the coaching to be organised for the NEET. Due to the non-payment for the bandwidth connection and VSAT dishes the classes were not continued after December 1, 2018. The classes were not resumed as the state government has no interest in restarting the coaching.” As per the officials the coaching should start from first week of June to next may for a good result.

For the better preparation of the state board student’s government has revised the syllabus. A principal said “there is new syllabus for the students studying in class 12 this year. It will help them for appearing the NEET next year. However, there should be good quality study material and regular tests held for better preparation of the students.”
The district where improvement in the result has been observed is Namakkal district. Here the schools started the NEET coaching where around 49 students including 29 repeaters were sent for MBBS this year from different schools as stated by P Swaminathan, secretary, SRV schools. There were many schools which collaborated with NEET coaching institutes and provided training to students in 2 batches where one batch for current students and 2nd batch for the repeaters. The main aim was to provide individual attention to students so that all the students can perform well in the exam.
