TOEFL Scores Accepted for Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS) Applications

TOEFL Scores Accepted for Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS) Applications

Educational Testing Service has recently announced that Canada Student Direct Stream will accept TOEFL scores from August 10, 2023, for issuing study permits. TOEFL is now approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for the SDS route, expanding student choices and providing institutions access to a wider pool of English-proficient applications. Canada now accepts PTE Academic for SDS applications, providing additional language testing options for students.

Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) program has recently included the acceptance of the TOEFL test conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The program eases the efficient processing of study permits for international students who plan to pursue their education at designated learning institutions across Canada.

In the past, only the IELTS test was accepted for the SDS route. However, the recent inclusion of the TOEFL test, well-known as the premier assessment of English-language proficiency, benefits thousands of students who annually leverage the SDS program. Additionally, educational institutions now have access to a broader range of applicants who can showcase their language abilities through this internationally recognized examination.

Starting from August 10, 2023, students from several countries, such as India, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Philippines, Senegal, China, Morocco, Colombia, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Antigua and Barbuda, Pakistan, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Peru, have the opportunity to include their TOEFL iBT scores as a part of their SDS application process. This recent addition allows students from these countries to showcase their English proficiency through the TOEFL examination.

Furthermore, along with the TOEFL test, Canada will now also accept the PTE Academic test for Student Direct Stream applications. This expanded acceptance provides prospective students with even more diverse language testing options, allowing them the flexibility to select the English proficiency assessment that best suits their skills and personal preferences.

Finalization of NExT Exam Rules: Presentation to NMC Expected Next Month

Finalization of NExT Exam Rules: Presentation to NMC Expected Next Month

National Exit (NExT) examination for medical graduates will be a combined exam, which will act as the licentiate exam to practice modern medicine. Additionally, it will serve as a standard for the allocation of postgraduate seats in broad specialties based on merit, as well as for evaluating foreign medical graduates seeking to practice in India.

A government official said that the regulations are in the process of being finalized and they will be soon placed before the National Medical Commission. He also said that a meeting for deciding a date to hold the test will be held sometime next month.

In December of last year, the National Medical Commission released draft regulations concerning NExT for public feedback. The purpose of these regulations is to establish consistency in the summative evaluation process across the country, ensuring that all medical graduates meet the minimum common standards of education and training.

The examination is planned to be divided into two parts: NExT 1, which will focus on theoretical knowledge, and NExT 2, which will be a practical, clinical, and oral examination covering seven clinical subjects or disciplines. Officials have indicated that a mock test is also in the works, intended to be conducted before the final exam is implemented. The purpose of this mock test is to assess the exam procedure and remove any anxiety among students.

The National Medical Commission, which was established on September 25, 2020, through the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, introduced the proposal for a common exit test for medical graduates. The commission is leading the efforts in implementing this initiative.

Initially, according to the 2019 law that came into effect in September 2020, the exam was scheduled to start within three years. However, the National Medical Commission extended the timeline by an additional year through a gazette notification. Since the establishment of the medical commission, detailed discussions have taken place among its members and experts regarding the specifics of the exam.

In addition to the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET), NExT will also be applicable to prestigious institutions of national importance, including the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). This step aims to establish a common standard for medical education across the country.

Last year Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the significance of the NExT Exam by stating that it will be equally applicable to all medical graduates, regardless of whether they were trained in India or any other part of the world. As a result, the exam will effectively address the challenges related to foreign medical graduates (FMGs) / mutual recognition.

He also stated that the Government of India is dedicated to establishing quality medical education, a transparent examination system, and healthcare services. The government is actively working with all stakeholders to accomplish these goals.

Chintpurni College banned from fresh MBBS admissions

Chintpurni College banned from fresh MBBS admissions

During an inspection at Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot, the National Medical Commission(NMC) found some serious deficiencies in terms of faculty, patient load and infrastructure. So the NMC has refused permission for Chintpurni Medical College to admit MBBS students for the 2023-24 session.

The NMC also made it clear that the recognition of the college is conditional. Previously, the college was banned from admitting students for two academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19. Following that the students of previous batches were shifted to different medical colleges.

A few months ago, an inspection by the Bada Farid University of Health Sciences found obtrusive deficiencies in patient load, required faculty and infrastructure. It was also noticed that the college was charging students beyond the prescribed fees without providing proper facilities.

After the inspection, the government wrote to the NMC that the college was playing with the future of the students and told them to inquire about the functioning of the college.

Last month, Anurag Agarwal, Punjab Additional Chief Secretary, wrote a letter to the NMC Director saying that this is a matter of grave concern that the college which had been granted permission by the NMC was not following the statutory regulations and guidelines.

Swaran Salaria, Chairman of the college, said that his college was not alone which had been disapproved. He accepted that there were a few deficiencies and he promised to overcome them so that the NMC will again allow them to start a fresh batch.

MBBS 2023 seats in Assam increased?

MBBS 2023 seats in Assam increased?

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has stated that the Assam state government has been making significant developments in the field of the healthcare sector within the last two years. These changes have led to better healthcare and more opportunities for medical students.

He also mentioned that the government has provided a health policy of up to Rs 5 lakh insurance coverage to over 56 lakh families of the state to ensure that even the people belonging to the low-income groups have an approach to quality healthcare. Additionally, 13 out of the 24 medical colleges in the state are operating effectively and the number of MBBS seats has increased by 60% to reach 1500. To serve the healthcare needs of the state's population as well as the northeastern region, Assam now has 7 dedicated cancer hospitals. This initiative aims to reduce the need for patients to travel to other parts of the country for treatment.

Also, the students earlier had to leave their state or region for pursuing a course in the medical line. But now with the large number of government medical colleges upcoming in the state, students will no longer need to go to other places in search of educational opportunities. This will result in the production of a large number of well-trained doctors who can cater to the healthcare needs of the people across Assam.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that several other medical colleges are in different stages of completion, indicating a significant increase in the number of students in the coming years Additional funding has also been approved towards the faster completion of the work regarding the Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital.
