In recent years, quality control of products manufactured and marketed in India, has become imminent both for private and public sector organizations. They are required to have a well structured quality management system in place. This has led to optimization of productivity and sales and has also increased competitiveness . With the growth in exports there has been an increase in the demand for quality control standards to be followed for all businesses involved in exports or joint ventures. International Organisation for Standardisation more popularly termed as ISO has based quality management systems to provide global language for common standards.
Indian producers follow these standards and also Indian quality regulations such as Agmark, ISI etc.

The job

Though duties will vary by industry and company a quality control supervisor

Writes inspection procedures , provides sketches, prototypes etc. for each aspect of production.
Details what areas need special attention measuring tools to be used and areas needing inspection.
Supervises a team of quality control technicians to carry out testing and inspection at all stages of production
Ensures that products meet the company's safety and quality assurance standards.
Carries out tests and re tests to ensure that all defective products are corrected.
Jobs in quality assurance require an attention to detail to avoid product liability lawsuits.



Training
The training initiatives in this field are not many. The universities /institutions which conduct post graduate level courses in Total Quality Management.
• Lucknow University, Lucknow. Courses: PG Diploma in Quality Management(one year); Masters in Total Quality Management(MTQM).(Training is through workshops)
Eligibility- BE/BTech, Diploma with 5 years experience.
Selection- Objective type entrance test.
• Indian Institute of Quality Management, Jaipur, & BITs Pilani, Rajasthan
MS Quality Management(3 semesters of course work and 1 semester of dessertation)
Eligibility- Industry employed with BE/MSc (Integrated first degree of BITs)

Course Master of Science Total Quality Mangement. Duration -2 years. Eligibility- Graduates of any discipline.

Course -Certified Quality Supervisor. The course aims to provide sound knowledge in Quality Systems, SPC/SQC, Metrology, Process Control, Safety and Shop Floor Management.
Eligibility- Working quality supervisors, Technicians, Quality Personnel, Shop Floor Inspectors.

Quality managers work in manufacturing industries of goods such as shoes, textiles, furniture, food, pharmaceuticals,

cosmetics, electronics, machine parts etc.
