Unlike last year, the number of GMAT or Graduate Management Test takers
in India has seen a sharp decline. While the data shows 30,633
applicants took the test in 2009, it’s just 25,394 students that sat for
the exam in 2011. While the numbers are dipping in India, China has
seen a growth of as much as 200% over a period of five years.
China recorded 13,048 GMAT test takers in 2007 and the number has increased to 40,069 candidates this same year.
The Times of India reports that in 2007, India was ahead with 21,481 applicants. The numbers went up marginally over the next two years and have been sliding since then as per the Asian Geographical Trend Report prepared by the Graduate Management Admission Council.
The report also states that the percentage of students younger than 25 appearing for GMAT in 2011 was 34% while it was 36% last year. The same figure among Chinese applicants rose from 48% in 2007 to 77% in 2011.
