Nursery admissions: Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung bans school quota in nursery admissions
NEW DELHI: Making radical changes that completely take away
discretionary powers from private-unaided schools, lieutenant governor
Najeeb Jung late on Wednesday released in nursery admission norms for
2014-15 that abolishes the 20% management quota and virtually ensures
that schools would only admit children living within a radius of 6km.
And 5% seats have been reserved for girls.
Under the new guidelines, 70 points out of 100 in the open category
seats have been assigned to the "neighbourhood' head, giving candidates
who live up to 6km away from the school an unbeatable advantage over
others. Kids who have a sibling studying in the school will get 20
points and five points each have been reserved for wards of alumni.
The admission process will begin from January 15, 2014, a fortnight later than last year.
Schools are sure to protest against the new norms which leave them no room to manoeuvre. "I don't think this will go down well with private schools. Nursery admissions have been messed up. The modalities will be difficult to implement. We (private schools) will get together," said Jyoti Bose, principal, Springdales, Dhaula Kuan.
Jung has divided the total seats into categories beyond the standard 25% for economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups (EWS/DG). He reserves 5% seats for staff children and another five for girls (in co-educational schools). The remaining 65% are "open seats' for the general category.
With government fixing both the criteria and points distribution for admissions, children living in west and north will be at a disadvantage because these areas have far fewer schools that are considered "good'.
Reacting quickly, the National Progressive Schools Conference has called an "emergent meeting of the executive along with the former chairperson and life-members" on Thursday. "We would take a stand on the new norms at the meeting," said NPSC chairperson Ameeta Mulla Wattal.
Minority schools, in which the 25% EWS reservation is not mandatory, have been reminded that they need to reserve 20% for EWS if they have been allotted land by government agencies.
Also, schools "set up for specific government services like armed forces, paramilitary forces, central services, all India services...shall have the right to reserve seats for the wards". This means schools such as Sanskriti as well as convent schools would continue to have the right to reserve seats under special categories.
The process for nursery admissions has been a matter of much litigation over the last few years. In 2007, and again in 2010, lawyer-activist group Social Jurist had challenged in court the government's decision to allow schools to choose categories and assign points. It argued that inclusion of any category (or criterion) beyond the neighbourhood clause was a violation of the RTE Act.
In 2013, the Delhi high court ruled that the RTE Act was not admissible with respect to nursery admissions beyond the 25% EWS seats. The judgment was challenged and the matter is pending in Supreme Court. However, the HC's ruling brought the 2007 notification back into force, which included a provision for aggrieved people to appeal to the LG. Social Jurist duly made a representation to the LG to fixed admission norms, which was followed by a HC direction to him to decide.

Tips to beat Stress on SNAP Exam day
For many students and children, the word Exam is synonymous to stress
and when it turns to competitive entrance exams like, SNAP test, the
level of stress reaches another high. In most cases, candidates are
unable to cope with the stress thus affecting their performance
adversely. Here are some handy hints that can help candidates to cope
with exam stress.
• Revise all the topics you are confident with. For the purpose, candidates can also make a time-table and follow it.
• Avoid going through the entire text for revision, instead, use the notes and texts prepared during the regular study. Candidates can also take the help of summary notes provided in the books for the purpose. Use diagrams, graphs, figures and illustrations for revisions as they provide ample amount of information.
• Take a 10 minutes break after every study session of around an hour or after finishing a topic, to avoid confusion.During the break, you can talk to your friends and parents to refresh your mood, remember the happy, light moments spent with your family and friends, see old albums, listen to soft pleasing music to distress yourself.

DTE Maharashtra announced MAH-MBA MMS-CET 2014
The Directorate of Technical
Education, Mumbai announced the exam dates for MAH CET 2014 for
admission to first year MBA/MMS for 2014-2015 in Maharashtra. MAH-MBA /
MMS CET 2014 examination will be held on 15 March 2014 and 16 March
2014.
The detailed notification regarding availability of information brochure, filling up online CET Application form, eligibility criteria, etc will be published on the DTE website in the month of January 2014.
According to the notification released by Director of technical education, 85% seats in the government run and aided MBA /MMS institutes in the state and 65% seats at private unaided and minority institutes will be filled through the ‘MAH-MBA / MMS-CET’ from 2014. The number of visiting faculty is 8 while that of permanent faculty is 95. The total number of seats offered in the institute is 400. Average domestic salary was 17.28 Lakhs.
IIM Bangalore mentions, “IIMB has internally developed an admission process that seeks to identify the most promising candidates for the PGP program. This process has been progressively refined over the years based on cumulative data on the Common Admission Test (CAT) applicants and on the academic performance of the candidates that were admitted at IIMB. The process arrived at is based on the relationship of academic performance in IIMB to past academic performance, CAT score, performance in interview and prior work experience.”

IIM Bangalore gives weightage to various parameters such as CAT score, prior academic records and work experience for short listing. “Multiple criteria are used to arrive at a composite score for every candidate. That score is used to select candidates for the subsequent stage,” mentions IIM Bangalore.
IIMB uses multiple parameters, namely academic performance in school, high school and graduation programs as well as candidates' scores in CAT to judge the suitability of candidates for the PGP program. Relevant work experience, if any, is also given weight in the selection.
IIM Bangalore adopts a two-phase selection process and accordingly these selection criteria are applied in two phases. The first phase process is applied to all eligible candidates who appear for CAT 2013 to determine those qualifying candidates who will be called for Written Ability test (WAT) personal interview (PI). Stage 1: Short listing for PGP 2014-16 batch
Point 1: The first short list of candidates is based on candidates securing minimum section-wise and aggregates percentile scores in the CAT.
All the subsequent processing, standardization and selection was limited to candidates belonging to this first short list alone.
This means that the CAT score alone was used as the basis for arriving at the first short list.

After short listing candidates on the basis
of CAT 2013 percentiles, IIM B will standardization and provide
various weightages on different parameters for all candidates
in the first shortlist as stated in Table 2:
Point 2: The candidates' percentage scores in the 10th and 12th board exams are initially adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board.
Point 3: Final scores obtained by the candidate are used for the bachelors' degree and professional degrees (if any). Incomplete or intermediate scores are considered only if the candidate's final score was pending. Thus, for final year bachelor's degree candidates, their incomplete graduation score would be taken in lieu of final graduation score.
Point 4: Candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible for weight under professional course. No other professional course is eligible for weight under professional course.
Point 5: The score/weight for work experience is calculated as: Pre PI score for Work Experience
= 5x/36 if 0 < x < 36
= 5 if x >= 36
Where x is the months of work experience up to September.
This implies that the score will peak at 36 months work experience and will remain at that level for candidates with work experience exceeding 36 months. The work experience score (maximum 5 in the pre-PI stage) will be multiplied by the quality of work experience score on a 5 point scale (0 - 0.5 - 1- 1.5 - 2) as given by interviewers in the PI process in Phase 2 to give a maximum score of 10 for work experience.
Point 6: Other than work experience or
professional course, the weights for the remaining four components (each of them being
standardized) are fixed as:
CAT = 20, 10th board=15, 12th board=10, Bachelors= 15.
Point 7: For all candidates in the first shortlist as stated in Table 2, the weighted total of the five
components namely (a) work experience or professional course, (b) CAT, (c) 10th board, (d)
12th board, (e) bachelors as stated in Point 5 is used to prepare a pre-PI rank list for calling
Candidates for the PI.
Point 8: The top 10 candidates in each sectional and total score in CAT, adjusted SSC, HSC, Bachelors, and Professional (CA/ ICWA/ CS), from the first shortlist, as created using the criteria in Table 2 automatically qualify for PI. These candidates are given a chance to appear for PI due to their exceptional performance on one parameter.
Stage 2: Final Selection
Sufficient candidates will be invited for Personal Interview to enable selection based on the additional PI evaluation components: (a) note content, (b) note style, (c) personal interview, and (d) review of work experience (if any).
During the PI process the candidates selected for interviewing during a particular half-day (morning or afternoon) session will have to write a short note (one page) on a topic provided by IIMB.
The topics chosen will typically reflect current political, economic and business affairs, though other topics such as sports and those that require more creative thinking may also be included. The time provided for writing the note will typically be about 30 minutes.
During the interview, the panel will evaluate each candidate’s performance on academic background, quality of work experience and other personal traits. The written note will be evaluated separately. Scores of both, written note and interview, in combination with pre-PI selection parameters will be used cumulatively in the final phase of selection for merit list.
Point 9: The performance of each candidate on the note will be scored by in terms of content and style. Each interviewer will use the Personal Interview to comprehensively evaluate the
Candidate’s motivation and ability to fit in and benefit from the PGP program.
All candidates will be required to provide three confidential reference letters from their employers or faculty and this will also be used in the personal interview evaluation. For each of the three elements of evaluation during the PI process - Note Content, Note Style and Personal
Interview - the average of the scores given by the interviewers will be considered.
Point 10: The work experience score will be multiplied by the quality of experience score, as evaluated by the interviewing panel as an assessment of the relevance of the work experience to the program. The quality of work experience score will be evaluated on a 5 point scale (0 - 0.5 -
1 - 1.5 - 2) by each member of the panel during the interviews.
Point 11: The note content score (weight=7.5), note style score (weight=7.5), and the personal
interview score (weight=20), after standardization across interview panels and sessions, will
be added to the pre-PI total to arrive at the final aggregate score.

Admission into the Post Graduate Program 2014-16 through GMAT
A separate process will be used for processing applications from candidates who apply with a GMAT score. To be eligible to apply with a GMAT score, a candidate must have resided abroad for at least 18 months in the preceding three years (Jan 2011 to Dec 2013) and should not be/ have been in a position to appear for CAT2013. The GMAT code for IIMB PGP is Q9H-KK-49.
The first short list among such applicants is created by applying the same percentile cut-offs for CAT2013, as used for the general category candidates.
For each applicant in this shortlist, each member of the evaluating committee (5 faculty members were involved in the selection process of the 2013-15 batch) will go through the applications in detail and in particular will evaluate the academic background and the international experience of the candidates.
All candidates who have been recommended would be required to appear for a Personal Interview (PI) process, either in person or through remote video conferencing. recognise exceptional performers across diverse academic backgrounds,
from each of the five categories of academic disciplines, top
50 candidates or top 1% of the number of applicants to IIM Ahmedabad
within each category-- whichever is lower -- will be identified.

on the basis of their total scores from CAT 2013, provided they
also meet the Minimum CAT-2013 Percentile criteria mentioned
in Step 2.

Stage 2: Final
Selection
In the second step, after the completion of written analysis and personal interviews (WA-PIs) of all candidates short-listed in the first step, candidates for admission to the 2014-16 batch of the PGP at IIM Ahmedabad are selected from among the candidates who have attended the WA-PI.

70% weightage is given to WA-PI
score and 30% weightage is given to the Composite Score at the
final stage of selection to arrive at the Aggregate Score. Selection
at this stage will strictly be based on ranks on the Aggregate
Score (based on CAT/GMAT*, Academic Rating (AR) and WA-PI Scores).
The WA-PI Score is based on
the following: performance in the written analysis, personal
interview, verifiable awards and recognitions, academic performance,
exceptional achievements, extra-curricular activities, post-degree
work experience, post-graduation education etc.

Written Analysis and
Personal Interviews
IIM Ahmedabad will conduct its Written Analysis and Personal Interviews (WA-PIs) in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi/NCR and Kolkata. Candidates short-listed for WA-PI will be intimated by registered post in the third week of January 2014.

The CAT takers applying to
IIMA’s post-graduate programmes can also find out if they
have been short-listed for WA-PI by visiting the IIMA website
in the third week of January 2014. No individual regret letters
shall be sent to candidates not short-listed for WA-PI.
