Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to hike their tuition fee for undergraduate courses
by 80 per cent for future students who will get admission this year. It
means that the 2013 entrants to IITs will have to pay Rs 90,000 per
annum as tuition fee, instead of the current fee of Rs 50,000 per annum.
Those who are already studying at IITs will not be affected by the fee hike. IITs will also continue to offer education free of cost for SC and ST category students, and also continue 100 per cent scholarships for poor students (the combined income of whose parents is less than Rs 4.5 lakh per annum). Thus, free education and 100 per cent scholarships offer relief to about 25 per cent students of IITs.
The Kakodkar Committee has recommended that the fee for undergraduate, Masters, and PhD programmes at IITs should be around Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh per annum, if IITs want to be financially autonomous. However, IIT Council revised it to lower the fee. IIT Council also stressed that students will have access to easy loan facility and no student, who has qualified JEE, will be denied entry into IITs on financial grounds.
The last fee hike at IITs was done in 2008-09, when the annual fee was doubled from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. The hike in IIT tuition fee has been made to make IITs financially sustainable. The fee structure will be reviewed every year. IITs have also agreed to five-year performance review from external agency.
