The question of giving weightage to Class XII marks in JEE created a
furore across India. It was alleged that since different education
boards follow different curriculum and have different difficulty levels
in exam papers as well marking system, the move would be unfair for
students competing from tougher education boards.
Hence, majority of the education boards have decided to maintain uniformity in the difficulty level of question papers of Class XII in Mathematics and Science to give their students a level playing field at the competitive exam level.
In 2010, twenty educational boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) adopted common core curriculum for Maths and Science. In 2011, all of 29 boards agreed to adopt this common core curriculum for the two subjects.
The Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE) and the CBSE are working on the common design of question paper based on this core curriculum with inputs from various state board members. The objective is to have a uniform difficulty level and an equivalent marking system for all the boards.
This year, a pilot run of this common design of question paper will be done by introducing it in five state boards for Class XI. These states will be Assam, Bihar, Kerala Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Once tested, it might be modified and improved upon before finally getting introduced for school-leaving exams at Class XII level from 2014.
