XAT 2019

XAT 2018 is an ONLINE MBA entrance exam which can be split into three parts: concept driven, practice intensive and environment sensitive. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and a few areas of Verbal & Logical Ability are concept driven; Decision Making & Analytical Reasoning is practice intensive section while General Knowledge is environment sensitive. Quick reading and comprehension skills need to be developed.
If you have appeared or prepared for other management entrance tests like CAT, IIFT, SNAP, and performed as per your expectations, you can consider half of your XAT preparations to be complete. However, there are exclusive sections to XAT and those sections make this exam even more challenging.
1. Brush up basics: The key is to focus on sharpening the basis of each section. Having your basics clear would be the key to solve any type of questions, be it easy and direct or complex and sitter based. Brush up on your grammar skills and be a grammar Nazi! Keep practicing the basics of mathematics and solving problems daily.
2. Focus on Exclusive Areas:
a) General Awareness: Get yourself updated with both current and static GK. Preparing current events for the past six months is essential. This section has no negative marking and is evaluated at the time of interview. Make sure you don’t spend more than 15 minutes.
b) Essay Writing: Read newspapers like The Hindu to become comfortable with a gamut of topics which could come for the XAT essay writing section. Always write sample essays and get them assessed on content and style to know your stand in essay writing. Don’t spend more than 20 mins on this section.
c) Decision Making: Identify the constraints and objectives to be met. Look for an option that compromises on none.
3. Mock Tests and previous years’ papers: Concept strengthening should be followed by consolidation of application orientation and thereafter by an adequate number of practice tests.
4. Negative Marking: Do not attempt many questions on guesswork and if you are in a dire situation and desperately need to its then advisable to apply the process of elimination (PoE) to eliminate the less probable choices to zero-in on the correct one. 0.25 for any wrong answer and 0.05 for more than 13 unattempted questions
The level of difficulty is high, read the questions carefully. Time management is an asset.
Time Management Section Wise
VALR: Attempt 18-20 questions in about 40 mins
QADI: Attempt 15-18 questions in about 50 mins
DM: Attempt 12-15 questions in about 60 mins
One can keep a buffer of 20 mins to attempt 3-4 questions from any section to increase percentile.
All the sections need equal importance as fetching maximum marks is the most important task and a gateway to move ahead. Clearing Sectional cut-off is mandatory.
