 How to prepare for CAT without coaching?

IIM, Bangalore will be conducting the CAT 2022 exam on 27th November for which registration has started. The candidates who are eligible as well interested can submit their application at the official website iimcat.ac.in within 14th of September. CAT is the access through which one can pursue MBA at IIMs or one of the topmost B-schools across India. 

The first step about preparation is to study about the exam. This exam does not possess a specific syllabus. It is simply the exam of one’s Quantitative Aptitude, Logic Reasoning, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation knowledge. One should go though the previous year question paper of CAT.

Some of the basic tips for CAT 2022 preparation are as follows:

  1. One should check the exam pattern and do analysis of the previous year questions.

  2. One should focus on basic as well as fundamental topics of every subject.

  3. A particular time should be divided for each and every module. One should focus on arithmetic, algebra and geometry.

  4. Vedic math should be done for fast calculation.

  5. One should prepare for the context based vocabulary.

  6. One should test the speed to solve questions. This will be beneficial during the exam.

The schedule to study for CAT preparation

  1. One should doe verbal ability 2 hours for each day.

  2. Logical reasoning should be studied 2 hours daily.

  3. The time should be increased to 3 hours after a month.

  4. Regularly one should read for 30 minutes.

  5. One should regularly practice each module questions.

How one should prepare without coaching?

Although the coaching for CAT exam is helpful, candidates can also crack this exam by not taking help from coaching centres but by self preparation.

  1. One should practice at least 2 full papers of CAT mock test.

  2. One should take sectional exams for VARC.

  3. One can watch YouTube channels like IQuanta, Verbal mentor for VARC and Elites grid for LRDI.

  4. Practice different types of DI-LR sets for each and every day.

  5. One should read the editorials of newspapers like Hindu, Indian Express and more.

  6. One should prepare his or her own strategy and find out his or her weak as well as strong points.


The pattern of CAT exam had been changed in 2021. Moreover, for the CAT 2022, in the eligibility criteria, the option for pass/ promotion has been cancelled. Those who are registering for CAT 2022, they should check the criteria for eligibility.
