GMC Increases MBBS Seat Count by 70 and Introduces New Super-Specialty Courses

GMC Increases MBBS Seat Count by 70 and Introduces New Super-Specialty Courses

Goa Medical College(GMC), since 2014, has been an institute to provide more seats and new courses and has more expansion plans.

They want to increase the MBBS seat number to 250 from the current 180. Also, they want to add the new MD/MS and super speciality courses. The MBBS seats were hiked in 2019, with 30 seats added for a new reserved category EWS.

Dr S.M. Bandekar, Dean of GMC, said that the college has applied to NMC to start super-speciality courses- MCh pediatric surgery, hand surgery and DM neurology.

GMC is also planning to offer the DM medical oncology speciality course. They have already started an outpatient department(OPD) for oncology patients and the construction of a regional cancer center which is to be completed by year-end. Currently, they have 14 super-speciality seats and two MCh neurosurgery seats added in 2021.

They also have 121 Postgraduate seats in different courses such as geriatric medicine, immunohematology and blood transfusion which were introduced in 2022. And now they plan to increase PG seats for surgery, anesthesiology, and psychiatry and beginning courses in emergency medicine, critical medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

In 2013, six allied health science degrees were started in GMC with 50 seats. Then in 2015, the seat capacity was doubled and another ten were added in 2019 for the EWS.

A proposal has been submitted to the government for a separate building for the allied health science course. A GMC official said that the students of applied health sciences are inconvenienced sometimes, as they don't have an independent building/section, but they should focus on the fact that they get to study in Goa itself and not leave their hometown.

In 2020, GMC introduced two PG courses- Master of Occupational Therapy and Master of Physiotherapy, and now they have 14 PG seats. They further aim to start PG courses in echocardiography and physiotherapy in the oncology system.
