Free education in Germany

Free education in Germany
Introduction
The German government has made the internationalization of higher education a strategic objective. Internationalization has various benefits ranging from positive impacts on the quality of research and education to enhancing the global reputation of academic institutions. It also has a number of economic “spill over” effects. It can help alleviate Germany’s skilled labor shortages and stimulate immigration. As illustrated by a detailed 2013 study commissioned by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), foreign students in Germany yield a considerable economic net gain for society. This holds true despite high public expenditures on foreign students, and the fact that German universities charge virtually no tuition fees, even for international students.

Germany as an Education Destination

Between 2013 and 2015, the number of international students enrolled at German institutions rose from 282,201 to 321,569, an increase of almost 14 percent. In 2015, China was the largest source country, accounting for 12.8 percent of inbound students, followed by India and Russia with 4.9 percent each. U.S. students only accounted for 1.7 percent of international enrolments in Germany. Despite increased interest in Germany as a study destination over the past decade, North American students prefer more popular European destinations like the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and France.
The German government seeks to further increase the country’s international student population to a total of 350.000 students by 2020. A joint position paper, issued by the federal and state governments in 2013, calls for the “strategic internationalization” of universities, better integration of foreign students, and increased funding for transnational partnerships and international marketing. It also advocates expanding the number of English-taught degree programs at German universities. This recommendation stems from the fact that mandatory German language requirements for most degree programs represent a substantial obstacle to enrolling foreign students. The number of English-taught master’s programs has increased considerably in recent years and currently accounts for approximately ten percent of all programs. Undergraduate-level programs, on the other hand, are still taught almost exclusively in German.
One of the most significant developments for the further internationalization of German higher education is the recent mass arrival of Indian students on German campuses. India is, after China, the second largest sending country of international students worldwide, and the number of mobile Indian students is projected to grow. Between 2014 and 2015, Indian enrollments in German institutions of higher education grew by a remarkable 24.4 percent to a total of 11,655 students, and India overtook Russia as the second largest country of origin for foreign students studying on German campuses. In light of these trends, some researchers predict that Germany could soon overtake the UK to become the largest market for international education in Europe.

·       Tuition fees in Germany

If you want to study in Germany, you’ll be happy to know that public universities do not charge tuition fees for Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes (except if you plan to pursue a Master's degree that focuses on a different subject than the one you studied as a Bachelor’s student). The German free tuition system is available for all foreign students, regardless of their country of origin.

·       Cost of living in Germany for students

Not only can you study for free in Germany, but it is also a pretty affordable country. The average costs of living for students range between 700 - 1,000 EUR/month, including accommodation. Cheaper options for international students are residence halls or sharing a privately rented apartment. You can also rent a one-room apartment (also called a studio).

Fear of student debt

Germany has free tuition are tradition and a "totally different understanding of the role education plays." People in Germany see higher education as "a public good, a way to train specialists that then benefit the public. “In the Anglo-Saxon world, people tend to see the "individual benefits, such as better career prospects and a higher income.” Germany is also committed to free tuition because of its goal of making a university education possible for children from low-income families. In the 1960s and ‘70s in Germany, there was a discussion about widespread access to higher education, in conjunction with support for free tuition.

IN BRIEF: THE GERMAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

Germany has a federal system of government which grants its 16 member states a high degree of autonomy in education policy. The Federal Ministry of Education in Berlin has a role in funding, financial aid, and the regulation of vocational education and entry requirements in the professions. But most other aspects of education fall under the authority of the individual states, or “Bundesländer”.
A federal law, the “Hochschulrahmengesetz,” provides an overarching legal framework for higher education. A coordinating body, the “Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Culture,” facilitates the harmonization of policies among states. Regulations and laws are consistent in many areas, but there can still be considerable differences in key areas. In the recent past, for instance, the length of the secondary education cycle varied from state to state. And different political approaches to tuition fees in different states meant that students in some states were paying €1,000 (USD $1,100) in annual fees while their peers across state lines studied for free.

85300 candidates invited for Canadian Permanent Residency in 2019

Canadian Permanent Residency in 2019

The government of Canada has invited 85,300 candidates from all over the world to apply for the Canadian Permanent Residency in 2019 . Compared to previous year's 89,800 Invitations to Apply (ITAs), it was low this year. Reports released by Canadian Immigration Newsletter suggests that Canada’s Express Entry system took both the candidates and observers through unexpected twists and turns in 2019.

Permanent Residency Invitations issued in 2019
The Canada’s federal immigration ministry, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has deviated from it's usual pattern of 2018 and there has been an increase in draw sizes from 2,750 to 3,900 ITAs every two to three months, following a development in 2019, according to the Canadian Immigration newsletter.
• Looking at Canada’s higher 2019 admissions target, it was quite obvious that the number of Express Entry candidates invited in 2019 would break the recorded high of 89,800 ITAs issued in 2018. Nevertheless, through 2019, the IRCC has held 26 draws from the Express Entry pool.
• The last three months of 2019 saw fluctuations in the draw size, as it touched 3,900 ITAs in October then decreased to 3,600 in November and finished the year with two December invitation courses of 3,200 ITAs each.
• One justification behind the 2019 statistics falling short could be the possibility that the IRCC had to hold the permanent residence applications filed through the Express Entry system due to it's processing standard of 6 months.
Minimum cut-off score jumped
Compared to the record low minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 413 in 2017, the score for 2019 was higher. This could be because there were a series of smaller draw sizes throughout the year and that the IRCC gave more than the usual two weeks elapse between draws on four occasions.
2019 saw the cut-off score range from a low of 438 on January 30 to a high of 475 on October 30, through the total 26 draws in the year. The huge increase in number of Express Entry candidates who qualify for provincial nominations and the 600 additional CRS points they bag could be another reason behind the higher minimum required CRS scores in 2019.

A new admission target in 2020
2020 is all set to witness Canada’s multi-year immigration levels plan which is focussed on permanent residents admitted through the three Express Entry-managed immigration programs to be increased to 85,800.
This residents' admission through three Federal High-Skilled program is expected to hike from 85,800 in 2020 and 88,800 in 2021.
Besides, the target for Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program is expected to rise to 67,800 in 2020 and 71,300 in 2021.

The Trudeau-led Liberal Party, in 2017 had introduced multi-year immigration targets that would see total admissions of new permanent residents to Canada reach 350,000 in 2021. The re-election of these liberals would now imply chances for the targets to rise again in 2022 and 2023.

The mandate letter issued to Marco Mendicino, Canada’s new immigration minister, clearly states an impending need for renewed call for “modest and responsible” rise in Canada’s immigration levels over the coming years.

POPULAR STUDY DESTINATIONS ABROAD

POPULAR STUDY DESTINATIONS ABROAD

Modern day trends have seen the destinations like Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Germany rise in preference among the Indian students and clearly, factors like world-class faculty, practical skills and extensive research-based learning programs are behind this.

Nonetheless, for the career focused students of today, just getting admitted in a prestigious institution won't suffice. They'll have to parallely consider post-study work scenario which can help enhance their career prospects. Taking up a job in the same country after course completion could help them explore their course's applicability as well as broaden their career horizons. With these in mind, these global education hubs have so implemented post-study work visas.
As for all the Indians who relocate to study abroad, finding such post-study works as well as securing permanent residence are major concerns.

A gist on these overseas destinations helps one compare and contrast to make a choice for the courses.

Canada: Canada has been the most preferred destination for studies due to it's high quality education, affordable tuition fees, Post-study work permits, & PR opportunities.

UK: UK has made it's mark in producing the most employable graduates worldwide. The 2-year post-study work permit to the international students in addition to other attractive features like affordable tuition fees and top ranked universities make UK a good option.

Australia: Ranked third in the Higher Education System Strength Rankings 2018, and with relatively low tuition fees, in comparison with USA and UK, Australia is the most preferred study destination.
It also offers a three-year post-study work permit to international students, followed by permanent residence. Also, according to reports, almost half of the student population end up working in a role related to their field of study.

USA: Even though the Universities are ranked fifth in QS world university ranking 2019, higher tuition fees, and not favourable post-study work permit and permanent residence policies prevent the rush into the country. However, the quality of education is the highest in the universities of the US.

Other popular Destinations:

Germany: This top study location in terms of low tuition fees and fifth position in ranking is the best option for students seeking admission in automotive and heavy machinery sector. It offers18-month post-study work permit to its students. However, the language is a big constraint.

Singapore: Students wishing to study in Singapore needs to apply for a 12 months pass. This tedious task, along with higher tuition fees, living costs , and strict PR opportunities makes it less preferred among students.

Preparing for competitive exams in short duration

Preparing for competitive exams in short duration

After you're done with your 12th grade, you'll have to face many competitive exams within a very stipulated time. Given a short duration of time, the question of how to crack these exams are worth discussing and these points will surely help you out.

1. Always Start Early: The competitive exams test the aptitude of a student and not the knowledge. It is therefore always better to start off early to get enough time to synchronize the board exams with your competitive exams. This can also buy you enough time to set aside more time for difficult topics.

2. Keep distractions aside and change your habits: Taking up a whole new routine can help you set aside more time for studies. Keeping distractions away and properly dividing time appropriately makes you stress free. You can keep a limit on time spent on meeting your friends, watching TV or playing on smartphones, etc. for at least this time of the year.

3. Make a study plan: You have to have both short term and well as long term plans, including the time division for each subjects. Charting out what is to be studied during the current day comes under short term plan, while assigning these many days for each subject comes under long term plans. Harder subjects should be assigned with more days, and the other way around too.

4. Start practicing form question banks: Question banks will have all sort of problems and are most appropriate while preparing for the exam in the last minute. Also, as it will have questions that would've appeared in various exams, it will help you master the concepts within short period of time.

5. Follow the Golden Rule: Easier Subjects First, Harder Subjects Last: Easy and tough subjects are dependent on the student's aptitude for the subject. It is always preferable that you go for your comfortable subjects first and then later allot more time for your difficult subjects. This will help you score better for the subjects that you're already familiar with and also understand your tough areas.

6. Highlight All the Difficult Concepts In Different Subjects: Highlighting the important points in the book helps one take a mental note of points. This might be helpful while revising the subject as you can skim through the important points easily whenever you can.

7. Practice Previous Year Questions Papers: Practicing previous year question papers help you get an idea on how the questions are formulated and on the areas they come from. The manner in which they're asked will also be familiar to you once you've gone through the papers. However, you can't completely rely on them either.

8. Revise: Revision is something that you can't miss out. Keep aside time for revision, even if you've not gone through the whole syllabus. It is revision that refreshes your mind and makes concepts stay fresh during the examination.

9. Follow smart work: Most of the competitive exams are not knowledge based and are about aptitude and reasoning. It is therefore advised that students follow smart work than hard work. You have to understand the concepts clearly to solve the questions and mugging up will not help you score in exams.
