UK universities’ income increases by £2bn, says report
UK universities have a reason to rejoice as the total income for universities in the UK rose by £2bn over the course of a year, official statistics show.
Quoting figures from the Higher Education Statistics, BBC reports that universities had an income of £25.4bn in 2008-09, compared to £23.4bn in 2007-08.
The data indicates £7.3bn of this came from tuition fees and education contracts – an increase of 16%.
The data also shows universities received £938m in 2008-09 by carrying out research for external clients.
Higher education institutions also earned £56.5m from intellectual property in the form of licensing fees and royalties.
While the universities’ total income grew by more than 8 per cent to £25.4bn, the expenditure also rose by 9% between 2007-08 and 2008-09 from £22.bn to £24.9bn.

Top body will help commerce students find the right job
Top body will help commerce students find the right job
Mumbai: Are you a commerce graduate who is unable to find a job? Don’t worry. There is some help coming for you from the Indian Commerce Association.
The association is holding a talent search examination across the country to help the industry get efficient candidates.
The All India Commerce and Management Talent Search Examination, as it is called, will be held on June 6 at several centres across the country.
TA Shiware, the coordinator for the exams in Maharashtra said the scores of candidates would be sent to the industry.
“Such a move will help bridging the gap between the industry and academia,” said Shiware, also the principal of KPB Hinduja College of Commerce.
“The students will be graded according to the industrial needs. The curriculum is also framed in a different manner, by taking inputs from several courses.”
A workshop at Indore and Hyderabad was conducted to decide on the test format.
All final year undergraduates are eligible for the exams to confirm their compatibility with the industry needs.
The exam will be divided in to two parts. Part-I will include the basic knowledge of commerce and management and will carry 200 marks, whereas with 50 marks, part-II will test the candidates’ business communication and managerial skills.
Nihal Shah, a final year student from a college in Vile Parle, said, “We do not know how this particular exam will help us. Most of the commerce students are forced to take up some post-graduation course to add an extra degree to their profile to get a good job. Today just holding a BCom degree is not enough. You need an MBA or a CA in addition to your graduation. If this exam promises to land us a job immediately after graduation, then it is a welcome change.”

Students' web design firm going great guns
Students' web design firm going great guns
BELGAUM: Their story is inspirational: four enthusiastic youngsters of the Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT-Belgaum) start their own little firm, dotCord IT Solutions, helped along by the college.
dotCord, a web designing firm, is doing well for itself. Sandeep Hegde and Manoj, who are behind the start-up, worked together on a website for IEEE GIT for a competition organized by IBM. The site drew much appreciation, and slowly crystallized into work.
"We began to think that we could start a firm based on our potential. And ever since, we haven't looked back," elaborated Sandeep. They were joined by Manav and Chinmay, and also put some interns to good use.
For the students, it's both a learning and earning experience. They design websites according to the requirements of clients, on the college campus itself. GIT has helped them by setting up an IT incubation centre, which encourages such extra-curricular activities.
The students have provided web solutions for small and medium-scale corporate companies -- locals as well as outsiders -- and have successfully designed over 40 websites so far. They also have some handsome projects in hand. "Initially, it was very difficult for us to get our first client. Entrepreneurs in Belgaum were generally looking towards Bangalore and Pune for web designers," said Sandeep, in his final year.
But, all that has changed. "Many entrepreneurs liked our job and are contacting us with projects," says Sandeep. And why is their work popular? He said they prefer to provide designs which are easy to operate technically, rather than making new and tough ones.
Prof Santosh Saraf, coordinator for IT incubation centre, said these students' attitude is an inspiration to the other students of the institute. They are also developed the site of an institute, he added.
Their firm won the `Best Student Entrepreneur Award' from TiE, the world's largest organization in fostering entrepreneurship, in 2009.

Now clear TOEFL to get into Andhra Pradesh Universities.
Now clear TOEFL to get into Andhra Pradesh Universities.
With several foreign students failing in the universities in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has decided to make it compulsory for foreign students to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to pursue courses in the state Universities.
KC Reddy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh state council for higher education, told a media organisation that owing to the current situation it has been proposed that students who wish to pursue courses from the universities in Andhra Pradesh will have to pass the TOEFL and the score from the test will be taken into consideration while giving admissions.
He also said that the proposal would be raised before chancellor and Governor ESL Narasimhan at the next Vice-Chancellors’ Conference.
However, the proposal remains debatable as many of the foreign students, whose mother tongue is not English, do not even have a working knowledge of English to be able to pursue studies in the State’s Universities.

New building policy for educational institutes in Gujarat
New building policy for educational institutes in Gujarat
Gandhinagar: Soon, all existing or upcoming colleges and institutes for higher education running in commercial complexes or any such buildings will have to follow the new guidelines of the state government.
The government has planned to publish new General Development & Control Rules (GDCR) under the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act 1976, which is likely to be called 'building regulation act' for higher education institutes.
A highly placed source said, "With the help of new GDCR, the government aims to focus on the security, safety and convenience of the students studying in higher education institutes." Under the proposed GDCR, escape routes of the education institute for emergency evacuation must be at least 3 metres. Fire escape, sunshade roofs, etc should also be provided in the institutes. The source added that the new rules will also have specific provision for the Global Floor Space Index (GFSI) which will be almost parallel to the existing norms for the township policy rates.
"The premium is likely to be between 25% and 35% as per the addition of GFSI. The maximum allowed height for the institute is likely to be 70 metres only and the built-up area is likely to be around 45% in low-rise and 30% in case of high-rise,'' said the source.
The government is also working on the new GDCR rules and policy for hospitals, hotels, malls and multiplexes.
Recently, a presentation on the proposed policy change was made before chief minister Narendra Modi.
"The urban development department is working on all these policies simultaneously and will announce the final result possibly in the next few months,'' said the source.

'Top 10 study abroad destinations for students across the world'
'Top 10 study abroad destinations for students across the world'
They say grass is always greener on the other side of fence. This proverb holds truth as there are a huge number of students who go abroad for further studies. In 2007, over 2.8 million students were enrolled in institutions outside their country of origin. According to a data complied by a leading magazine in education sector, the number of mobile students across the globe has grown by 53 per cent in 1999 and by 2.5 times since 1975. These statistics say India and China have the largest pool of outbound students.
When it comes to favourite destinations, the USA wins hands down. While nearly 4,21,148 Chinese students go abroad, 24 per cent of them go to the USA to pursue higher studies. The US is also the first choice for close to 86,000 Indian students. Australia and UK are the next preferred destinations with 24,523 and 23,833 students respectively.
It is interesting to note that maximum students from East Asia and the Pacific prefer going to US for higher studies. Even India played host to nearly 8,000 foreign students in 2006.
The data is sourced from Global Education Digest 2009; UNESCO Institute of Statistics. Given below is the list of 10 most popular destinations to study abroad.
