AMU court approves varsity centres outside Aligarh

The Aligarh Muslim University court, the institution's supreme governing body, has approved the proposal for the establishment of its centres in other parts of the country.
A special meeting of the AMU court, which concluded yesterday evening, described the decision for establishing these centres as a "historic step".
"All hurdles, including legal ones, will be cleared soon," AMU vice chancellor Prof Abdul Azis told reporters.
On whether the Allahabad high court's preliminary oral observations on a PIL last week constitute a hurdle in opening these centres, Azis said "It is true that the high court has placed some restrictions pertaining to the starting of admissions in the centres, but the court has not asked us to stop any preparatory work for establishing these centres."
Moreover, "the Central government was committed to "clearing all such legal roadblocks," he said, adding that all the political parties were fully supportive of the move for establishing these centres outside Aligarh.
Azis denied allegations that the AMU authorities were focusing on these centres at the cost of the mother institution.
The vice chancellor, however, said that the university had failed to clear a much publicised proposal for establishing four higher secondary schools in Aligarh in the wake of shortage of seats in existing four schools maintained by it.
He also said that Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College was facing a serious financial shortfall which was having an adverse impact on its functioning.
A Rs150-crore plan for modernisation and expansion of the medical college was on the anvil, he said.
Azis also said he would soon appeal to health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to increase the annual grant of the running expense of the medical college.
The vice chancellor brushed aside allegations that the democratic rights of students of AMU were being crushed.
He, however, emphasised that there was "no need at the moment for reviving the AMU Students' Union, which has been lying defunct for over 5 years. "I do not think there is any need at present for holding elections to the Students Union," he said.
