IIT fees not to increase: Government


The students who are planning to take admission to Indian Institute of Technology can take heave a sigh of relief as the government has rejected the proposal to hike the fee of undergraduate programmes of the premier technical institutes by about four times.

The Anil Kakodkar committee, which was established to study the roadmap the autonomy and future of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), had recommended that the fees be raised from Rs. 50,000 per annum to Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh per annum.
On the other hand, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal rejected the proposal, saying it would act as 'restriction' to aspiring students, said source in the Ministry. The committee has been asked to rework on the fee structure considering aspirants from all section of society. Sibal announced to establish new 50 research parks at a cost of Rs. 200 crore during the 12th Plan Period.
The proposed research park would be established on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode that will encourage private players to carry out research activities in collaboration with government institutions. One park is already in existence in Chennai.
