CBSE’s vocational courses in Hospitality and Tourism

Towards ironing out the issue of acute shortage of trained professionals in the field of Hospitality and Tourism, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to launch a brand new vocational course each in food production, food and beverage services, front office management, bakery and confectionary and travel and tourism.
These skill-based courses under Hospitality and Tourism Sectors are likely to commence from the academic year . Interestingly, students who opt for these courses may get additional weightage in the hotel management entrance examination.
The schools have already been informed by the CBSE that the National Council of Hospitality and Catering Technology(NCHCT) is exploring possibilities for providing the students passing out of this course with an additional weightage in the entrance examination for graduate courses in hotel management in the institutes of hotel management in the country. NCHCT is the professional body for the joint certification of CBSE's vocational courses under the hospitality and tourism sector.
Points to remember:
  • The new courses consist of two vocational subjects each in classes XI and XII
  • Besides these two vocational subjects, students can take one language and two academic elective subjects relevant to the field
  • Students also have the option to take up any two academic elective subjects besides two vocational subjects
  • The students can also opt for sixth additional subject that can either be an academic elective subject or a vocational subject.
CBSE has asked all the interested schools to start one or more of these vocational courses in class XI from the academic year 2013-2014.
