Why Dentists Are Pursuing MBAs?

 Why Dentists Are Pursuing MBAs?

Studying an MBA could be the best option if you're a healthcare specialist wishing to increase your commercial knowledge and managerial abilities.

Finding managerial and consulting positions, as well as work involving data and technology, may become available to you if you acquire critical MBA abilities.

The HKU MBA: Why?

Ms. Neeladri gained a variety of technical and practical dentistry skills throughout her three years of employment at Clove Dental, India's largest corporate dental chain, after receiving her dental licence. To broaden her knowledge and view of business, she made the decision to obtain an MBA.

She was eager to study the business frameworks and management techniques that could be applied to address numerous systemic issues in the healthcare sector.

Neeladri wanted to study in a varied business hub like Hong Kong because she felt that she hadn't had much opportunity to network or discover the business world.

She'd have the chance to study specialist tracks in London, New York, and China, giving her the chance to interact with both Eastern and Western business cultures firsthand. According to Neeladri, attending London Business School was a wonderful experience that exposed her to a wide range of individuals and their approaches to and methods for resolving issues.

Ms. Sangeeta began her professional life in India as a dental specialist. She enrolled in the HKU MBA to network with experts from other countries and businesses; 98% of the cohort at the HKU MBA are foreigners.

She adds that having such a broad mix of classmates made for a stimulating and priceless learning experience.

Enrolling gave Sangeeta the chance to learn vital skills that would enable her to make the adjustments she thought were required in the healthcare sector in the post-pandemic era.

Utilising the abilities acquired during the HKU MBA

As a healthcare practitioner pursuing an MBA, you can develop a variety of transferrable skills that will enable you to combine your medical knowledge with managerial prowess and business savvy. Developing these talents, in Neeladri's opinion, was a programme high point.

The similarities between consulting and dentistry—seeing a client, determining the issue, and discussing solutions—became more apparent to her as she progressed through the curriculum, she adds.

To focus on their interests, MBA students at HKU can select electives. Business technology and innovation, strategy and consulting, managing in China and Asia, or marketing and general management are all available as electives.

Real-world business examples from various industries that reflect the quickly altering business landscape are also taught by faculty using an experiential learning approach. Neeladri claims that this aided her in making the shift from the hierarchical structure of dentistry to working as a team to discover solutions.

Sangeeta has the fundamental abilities in communication and teamwork because of her prior experience managing a clinic.

She took classes like Artificial Intelligence for Business Leaders and Big Data Consumer Analytics while enrolled in the HKU MBA, which gave her a solid foundation to start in a new position after graduation.

In her position, she says she uses the quantitative analysis, forecasting, and modelling abilities she acquired on a daily basis.

Gaining access to new opportunities and having an impact on the healthcare sector

The healthcare business offers a wide range of unique industries and opportunities for career advancement. Both Sangeeta and Neeladri learned about fascinating new challenges as a result of studying the HKU MBA.

Since completing the programme, Sangeeta has worked as a project manager overseeing health technology research and collaborating with prestigious universities to put into practise techniques for dental healthcare professionals using digital learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to Sangeeta, attending the MBA programme gave me the bravery and confidence to bring about change, both in my professional life and hopefully in the future of dental care as well.

She claims that without the HKU MBA, she wouldn't have had the in-depth technological knowledge necessary to excel in the position.
