During their recent visit to Delhi, Australian education minister Jason Clare and union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan worked together to finalize the program. The program allows students' degrees earned in either India or Australia to be recognized in the other country, and vice versa.

This agreement will make it easier for Indian students to study and work in Australia. However, the mechanism has yet to be implemented for courses such as engineering, medicine, or law.

PM Albanese on Australian universities setting up campuses in India

Two of the world's top 300 universities have expressed interest in establishing an offshore campus in India. Two of them are Geelong Deakin University and the University of Wollongong.

Geelong Deakin University will be the world's first university to open an off-campus campus in Gandhinagar, India. The operation to open the campus could begin soon, with students able to enroll in post-graduate courses. According to Prime Minister Albanese, the campus will offer cybersecurity and business analytics courses.

The establishment of offshore campuses in India will allow Indian students to study top-tier study programs without having to travel to Australia.

Ravneet Pawha CEO of Deakin University said that this is a great occasion for both countries and we are thrilled to have contributed to two 'firsts' in the Australia-India education sector story. To meet industry demands, the campus will provide top-tier courses and world-class education.

In last year's budget finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman announced to let world-class universities set up their campuses in GIFT city to offer courses in financial management, FinTech, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics "free from domestic regulations".

GIFT City is a multi-service Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Gandhinagar that houses India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and an exclusive Domestic Tariff Area (DTA).

Maitri Scholarship

The program provides financial assistance to Indian students studying in Australia for up to four years. The program will also strengthen cultural, educational, and community ties between India and Australia.

On February 14th, 2022, Australian ministers announced the Maitri scholarship in a joint media statement. The Maitri scholarship, worth $11.2 million, will help high-achieving Indian students study at Australian universities.
