IIM-A to hike fees by 9.6% to Rs13.7 lakh
Fee hikes at IIMs have been controversial in the past, with the government, which owns these premier business schools, resisting fee increases
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad or IIM-A said on Tuesday it is hiking fees by 9.6% to Rs13.70 lakh for its flagship two-year post-graduation programme for the Class of 2012 which will gain admission this year.
The fees include all costs other than food. “The fee has been arrived at after taking into account the significant increase in costs due to implementation of 6th Pay Commission’s recommendations as well as general rise in operating costs due to high inflation in the economy”, said a press statement on the school’s website.
A school PRO declined to say how much the fees was earlier. She said the calculations showed the fees was 9.6% higher than for the Class of 2011.
Fee hikes at IIMs have been controversial in the past, with the government, which owns these premier business schools, resisting fee increases. The IIMs have said they are autonomous schools and have a right to raise their fees.
The IIM in Bangalore said on Monday it will raise fees to Rs13 lakh from Rs11.5 lakh, for the Class of 2012, PTI reported. The decision was taken at a meeting of the board of directors, chaired by Mukesh D Ambani.
IIM-B director, Prof Pankaj Chandra told reporters that the students will pay fee of Rs6 lakh in the first year of study, and the remaining Rs7 lakh in the second.
The IIMs stressed that the schools will continue to provide fee waivers to students based on family income. At IIM-A, 41 students of a total of 310, or 13% of the class, studied free in the academic year 2009-10.

Ahmedabad: The authorities of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA)vociferously articulatedtheir demand for autonomy during the institute's 45th annual convocation ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the board of governors of IIMA, Vijaypat Singhania, referred to the contribution of C Rangarajan in fighting for deregulation in the fiscal field and said, "We all can see the emerging benefits of loosening the strangulating controls that governed our system."
To Rangarajan, he said, "Sir, if it can work in the fiscal field, which it did, I want to suggest we give it a shot in the field of education as well. Let the government free it from the strangulating controls that it is tied down in, at all levels."
He said, "We need greater economy in functioning and running these great temples of learning. The foreign universities bill proposed by the government would provide the same freedom of operations to the foreign academic institutions as provided to the private domestic academic institutions in the country. If this were to happen, without the public academic institutions being unshackled from the government restrictive controls, then these institutions (government academic institutions) would not be able to compete with better known foreign bodies."
Expressing similar views, director of IIMA Samir Barua said, "IIMA aspires to become a global management school. It is time for the government and the larger society to set it free from all government controls so that it can compete without its hands being tied against the foreign B-schools that are allowed entry to India."
A total of 424 students including 17 students of Fellowship Programme in Management , 283 students of Post-Graduate Programme in Management , 19 Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management students and 80 Post-graduate Programme for Executives among others.

Procedure adopted by IIMA for short-listing candidates for personal interviews
1. Qualifying the IIMA Minimum Cut-offs for CAT
The IIMA minimum cut-offs are applied to candidates‘ CAT scores. The minimum cut-offs for DA, ST, and SC categories are lower than the minimum cut-offs for the other categories. These minimum cut-offs are:
DA/ST/SC: score not less than 17% in each section & not less than 25% in aggregate.
For others : score not less than 25% in each section & not less than 33% in aggregate.
A total of 3776 candidates met the IIMA minimum cut-offs for CAT. The number of
candidates in each category who met the respective minimum cut-off are as follows:
DA œ 11, ST - 25, SC - 115, NC-OBC - 113, and Other (general) - 3512.
4. Qualifying Pre-Screening Criteria
Those candidates who met the IIMA minimum cut-offs for CAT are considered for
further pre-screening. For DA and ST candidates, the pre-screening criteria remained
same as the IIMA minimum cut-offs for those categories. Pre-screening criteria are:
DA/ST : score not less than 17% in each section & not less than 25% in aggregate.
SC : total percentile not less than 80 & sectional percentiles not less than 65.
OBC : total percentile not less than 88 & sectional percentiles not less than 80.
Other : total percentile not less than 98, section 1 and section 2 percentiles not less
than 94, and section 3 percentile not less than 94.5.
The number of candidates in each category who met the pre-screening criteria are as
follows: DA - 11, ST - 25, SC - 109, NC-OBC - 107, and Other (general) - 1160.
5. Short-listing for Personal Interviews
DA Candidates:
All 11 candidates who met the IIMA minimum cut-offs for CAT are called for
interview.
ST Candidates:
All 25 candidates who met the IIMA minimum cut-offs for CAT are called for
interview.
SC Candidates:
The 109 candidates who met the pre-screening criteria were considered for further
evaluation. A Composite Score (CS) was assigned to the candidates based on their
total percentile and pre-bachelors academic performance (AP1). The CS formula is as
follows:
CS = 0.3 ( total percentile - lowest total percentile of the pre-screening criteria) + AP.
Maximum value for CS2 is 22. Arranging in descending order, top 86 candidates are
short-listed for personal interview.
NC-OBC Candidates:
The 107 candidates who met the pre-screening criteria were considered for further
evaluation. A Composite Score (CS) was assigned to the candidates based on their
total percentile and pre-bachelors academic performance (AP1). The CS formula is as
follows:
CS = 0.5 ( total percentile - lowest total percentile of the pre-screening criteria) + AP.
Maximum value for CS2 is 22. Arranging in descending order, top 86 candidates are
short-listed for personal interview.
Other (general) Candidates:
The 1160 candidates who met the pre-screening criteria were considered for further
evaluation. A Composite Score (CS) was assigned to the candidates based on their
total percentile and pre-bachelors academic performance (AP1). The CS formula is as
follows:
CS = 3 ( total percentile - lowest total percentile of the pre-screening criteria) + AP.
Maximum value for CS2 is 22. Arranging in descending order, top 609 candidates are
short-listed for personal interview.
Notes:
1.Academic Performance (AP) values are assigned as given in Table 1 below.
The maximum value of AP for a candidate would be 16.

2. Different coefficients, 0.3, 0.5, and 3 are used in the CS formula for SC, NC- OBC, and Other (general) categories respectively to take care of the difference in the range of values for the term in parenthesis ( total percentile - lowest total percentile of the pre-screening criteria) for each of the categories.
IIM Ahmedabad has used three criteria for Personal Interview calls.
1. Class Xth marks
2. Class X11th marks
3. CAT Score
Intrepretation
1. Unlike IIM B/L, IIMA hasn’t given any weightage to the prior work experience.
2. There is no weightage given to your Bachelor’s stream or marks
3. It seems that abnormally high importance has been given to Class Xth and Class X11th marks i.e., as The CAT score is taken as yours-lowest percentile, so for general category students, consider 2 cases
Student 1: CAT percentile: 100%, Class Xth :88%, Class X11th marks ( 89%)
Student 2: CAT score: 99% ( So there were 2500 students who got more marks than him in CAT), class Xth: 90%, class X11h:91%
So, student 1 score is=3x2+12=18
Student 2 score is=3x1+16=19
Hence, student 2 would get the call over student 1.
Worst, if a student have scored less than 80% (even 79%) in Xth or X11th, next to impossible to get IIMA call
4. As the conditions are ‘OR’ in nature, a student can get a call if he has done miserably in one of the criteria, i.e. is the CAT score is 98 percentile (lowest pre screening cut off) but the student have done remarkably well in schooling, scoring over 90% marks in both the board exams, he has a fair chance to get IIMA call.
To Summarise, Studyplaces believe that IIM Ahmedabad is looking for a consistent academic record of the students during the schooling with no focus on Bachelor’s performance. This also justifies the fact that why many students get only IIMA call. Also, As the average marks are higher in Science streams because of subjects like Mathematics which are high scoring subjects, we feel that there is an advantage for students which pursued Science and Commerce in school over humanities.

For all IIMs, the minimum eligibility criterion for admission to PGP:
The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.
Candidates appearing for the final bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2006 from the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute (issued on or before June 30, 2006) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical, viva voce, etc.) in all the subjects required for obtaining the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by Principal/Registrar of their college/institute. The deadline for submission of mark sheet and the certificate is December 31, 2006. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management
The Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), equivalent to MBA, is a unique programme specially designed to enhance the quality of management in the food and agribusiness sector, and help this sector meet the challenges of the evolving market place. Agriculture accounts for about 25 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) and for over 60 per cent of employment. The growth of this sector, therefore, is crucial to the development of Indian economy.
Admissions
Domestic candidates are admitted through the regular admission channel that is based on the applications received through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), which will be conducted on the third Sunday of November every year, at various centers in India. These candidates are required to take the CAT, and if short-listed attend a group discussion and interview, and provide three letters of reference from persons who know them closely in terms of their academic/professional performance. Final selection is based on performance in CAT, scholastic achievement, work experience, performance in the group discussions, written summary of group discussion, and interview, and three letters of reference.
Entrance Test: Applicants are required to appear for the COMMON ADMISSION TEST (CAT) conducted by IIMs, to be held on 20th November, 2005.
Applicants must purchase the CAT Bulletin from select branches of State Bank of India on or before 20th August, 2004. The CAT announcement has appeared in leading newspapers on 18th July, 2004. Please read and follow the instructions given in the CAT Bulletin.
Send the filled-in CAT Application Form to the concerned IIM's on or before 10th September, 2004 as mentioned in the CAT Bulletin. The concerned IIM will send you the Test Admit Card mentioning your CAT Registration Number.
Eligibility

(1) A bachelor’s degree in agriculture or allied subjects such as agricultural engineering, animal husbandry, dairy science or technology, fisheries, forestry, food technology, horticulture, veterinary sciences or botany or zoology; biotechnology as related life sciences.

PGPX: One Year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives
The one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is aimed at experienced executives who wish to acquire formal training in management. It has a general management focus, with an emphasis on managing across borders and cultures. It has an international immersion component besides teaching content drawn from many countries. The goal is to prepare participants to be ready to take leadership positions in the firms that they join.

The on-campus recruiting program at IIMA, noted for its focus on corporate customer service, provides a convenient way for you to interview our students for permanent employment and summer internships.

Comprehensive Course Content
During the two years at IIMA, the students complete a set of basic courses in various management disciplines. In addition, they take a minimum of 15 courses from a list of over 50 optional courses to deepen understanding in their chosen management stream.
International Orientation
New course introduction is a continuous process and many of the most recent ones bring in an international touch through cases and situations set in a global context. For example, in the last two years alone, over 15 elective courses with an international orientation have been introduced.
Summer Internship
During the break between the first and second year, the students undergo a summer internship for a period of eight to ten weeks with the Institute's corporate partners. The summer internships are excellent opportunities for students to gain first hand industry experience and to challenge, test and validate the classroom learning
Student Exchange Programme
IIMA’s student exchange programme with 29 institutions in 19 countries, including the USA, France, UK, China, and Sweden enables students to acquire a global perspective of business and the economic environment
Extra Curriculum Activities
For an IIMA student, there is never a dull moment. Students immerse themselves in various clubs covering a wide range of interests and organise many events that transcend cultural and intellectual boundaries. The most notable among them are the sports, literature and cultural festival (Combos), marketing fair (Insight), intra-institute cultural fest (Chaos) and an international B-School meet (Confluence)

For all IIMs, the minimum eligibility criterion for admission to PGP:
The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.
Candidates appearing for the final bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2006 from the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute (issued on or before June 30, 2006) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical, viva voce, etc.) in all the subjects required for obtaining the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by Principal/Registrar of their college/institute. The deadline for submission of mark sheet and the certificate is December 31, 2006. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

Post Graduate Programme in Management
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is among the oldest, largest and most prestigious of the Institute's teaching programs. Ranked the best programme in the continent, and among the best in the Asia-Pacific Region, the programme emphasizes innovative problem solving, shared perspectives, applied management philosophy, and group work.
Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management
The Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), equivalent to MBA, is a unique programme specially designed to enhance the quality of management in the food and agribusiness sector, and help this sector meet the challenges of the evolving market place. Agriculture accounts for about 25 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) and for over 60 per cent of employment. The growth of this sector, therefore, is crucial to the development of Indian economy.
Admissions
Domestic candidates are admitted through the regular admission channel that is based on the applications received through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), which will be conducted on the third Sunday of November every year, at various centers in India. These candidates are required to take the CAT, and if short-listed attend a group discussion and interview, and provide three letters of reference from persons who know them closely in terms of their academic/professional performance. Final selection is based on performance in CAT, scholastic achievement, work experience, performance in the group discussions, written summary of group discussion, and interview, and three letters of reference.
Entrance Test: Applicants are required to appear for the COMMON ADMISSION TEST (CAT) conducted by IIMs, to be held on 20th November, 2005.
Applicants must purchase the CAT Bulletin from select branches of State Bank of India on or before 20th August, 2004. The CAT announcement has appeared in leading newspapers on 18th July, 2004. Please read and follow the instructions given in the CAT Bulletin.
Send the filled-in CAT Application Form to the concerned IIM's on or before 10th September, 2004 as mentioned in the CAT Bulletin. The concerned IIM will send you the Test Admit Card mentioning your CAT Registration Number.
Eligibility
Graduate in any discipline.
PGP–ABM
(1) A bachelor’s degree in agriculture or allied subjects such as agricultural engineering, animal husbandry, dairy science or technology, fisheries, forestry, food technology, horticulture, veterinary sciences or botany or zoology; biotechnology as related life sciences.
Or
(2) A master’s degree in any discipline of agriculture, economics with specialization in agriculture economics, cooperation, food technology, rural studies, rural sociology.
Or
(3) At least three-year bachelore’s degree in any discipline with a minimum one-year managerial technical work experience after graduation in the fields closely related to agriculture, agro/food processing or rural development.
PGPX: One Year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives
The one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is aimed at experienced executives who wish to acquire formal training in management. It has a general management focus, with an emphasis on managing across borders and cultures. It has an international immersion component besides teaching content drawn from many countries. The goal is to prepare participants to be ready to take leadership positions in the firms that they join.

Placements
The on-campus recruiting program at IIMA, noted for its focus on corporate customer service, provides a convenient way for you to interview our students for permanent employment and summer internships.
The process has been designed jointly by the faculty, recruiters and students over the years and tries to optimize the interests of all stakeholders in the placement process. Typically the placement season commences in November with the summer internship placement and ends with the graduate placement in March.
IIMA follows a day system of placements, where companies are invited to recruit in various slots depending on the preference of the students.

Academics
