Vedanta ready to comply environ ministry on varsity project

BHUBANESWAR: Unfazed by the union environment ministry putting on hold clearance of its university project in Orissa, the Vedanta group on Tuesday said it would tackle the issue by submitting requisite documents with the authority.

"The ministry has put on hold the environment clearance accorded to our university project and not cancelled it. Therefore, we will comply with all the norms to secure the nod," Vedanta Group's Orissa project vice president A Samal told reporters in Bhubaneswar.

Claiming that the company had not violated any of the environmental norms, Samal said there was no truth behind allegations made against the varsity project.

"The university project will continue like other projects in Orissa," Samal said.

The ministry on April 16 accorded conditional environment clearance to the project near Puri and issued an direction in the wake of charges of irregularities by its promoter.

The direction to keep the project in abeyance has come within a month of the ministry granting conditional environmental nod to the foundation which is building the university near Puri.

While doing so, the ministry imposed 50 conditions, including inviting any public objection to the project.
