Maths syllabus rejected, DU semester system in jeopardy

Maths syllabus rejected, DU semester system in jeopardy

New Delhi: Two general body meetings of the mathematics faculty have rejected the syllabus for the subject under the new semester system that is to be implemented at Delhi University (DU) this year.

The semester system was to be implemented this year for only science and commerce undergraduate courses. With the mathematics faculty rejecting the syllabi, questions are now being raised whether the system will be implemented for even the science stream now.

The decision reached by the meetings of the mathematics faculty has come only a day before the DU authorities were to announce the schedule for the admission procedure, which is to begin on May 28, as well as the plan for the semester system for science courses.

The DU teaching body has been against the implementation of the semester system since it was suggested. Now, after the syllabi for B.Sc. Honors in Mathematics beingrejected, the argument has taken on a fresh phase between the teachers and Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental.

Deepak Pental had recently announced that the university would not be able to implement the semester system for social science and humanities courses as their syllabi had not yet been prepared. This was also delayed owing to the fact that teachers at several colleges had refrained from submitting the results of the students' internal assessments.

The conclusion reached by the general body meeting, which was attended by around 50 teachers from different colleges and the maths department, said that they hadrejected the syllabus under the semester system at the undergraduate level for the academic year 2010-2011.

In the second meeting that was held in the afternoon to finalize the syllabus for undergraduate courses in mathematics besides B.Sc. Honors in Maths, the proposed syllabus was again rejected. This came as a major blow to the semester system as this syllabus was to be the connecting link for B.Sc. programmes in mathematics and science subjects.

The conclusion was finally signed by 35 teachers from the mathematics faculty.

The general body reasoned that they had rejected the syllabi under the semester system as faculty members from various colleges had not been consulted before formulating the new syllabi and had opposed the implementation of the semester system.

Academic Council member Rajiv Verma said, "There will now be problems in the implementation of the semester system in other science courses as thesyllabus that was rejected during the general body meeting was a common part of all these courses."
