National Institute of Design gears up for summer workshops
Ahmedabad: As the temperature rises and the National Institute of Design (NID) takes a break from its routine academic activity, people in the city will get an opportunity to learn different skills from the institute. The premier institute will be organising a series of workshops from May 10 to 21 in 11 different areas.
An array of skills ranging from fresh, unusual fields like designing on internet websites or screen printing on paper and binding designs to conventional areas of skills like calligraphy and textile printing, will be offered in these workshops.
The sessions are open to all and will be conducted by faculties and graduates of the institute. Speaking about a workshop called 'Experiment with papier mache', NID graduate Abhijeet Paul, who has arranged the workshop, said: "The workshop will teach techniques of making papier mache and mould things out of it."
Paul added: "When used and waste paper is soaked in water and certain chemicals, they become soft and can be moulded into a variety of items.
It is a good method of re-using waste paper. You can make various things like decorative items and toys and even real furniture. The only drawback of the material is that it is not water resistant."
Ex-faculty of NID VD Suman, who will be conducting aworkshop called'Block printing and natural dyes', said: "The participants with be introduced to different aspects like the history of block printing, making blocks, types of block, transferring designs form paper to block and so on."
