Deluge of job offers in hospitality sector

Deluge of job offers in hospitality sector

Gone are the days when hotel management graduates spent most of their time either in kitchen, front office or house-keeping at a hotel. Today, with a steep growth in the economy there is a spurt of opportunities for them to work as chefs, resort managers, sales and marketing executives, food critics, bar managers, catering business, event managers, celebrity chefs, catering officers in cruise-liners and airlines.

According to industry experts as reported by media, the country will need more than one lakh trained, employable staff in the hospitality industry in the next three years. The supply is far behind. The state-run 31 Institutes of Hotel Management and 150 private institutions produce around 12,500 graduates each year, according to Crisil research. Apart from 5-star hotels, the 3-star and 4-star categories too compete for this pool of graduates. Also with India catching on as a popular tourist destination and sporting events like Commonwealth Games, IPL and Hockey World Cup being held in the country, there is a huge demand for trained professionals.

K K Saraf, director and secretary of National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, which is the apex body for education and training in hotel management, says, “With the government encouraging its employees to travel, private companies offering paid holidays to its executives and a trend of people eating out, there is a huge demand for good lodging facilities, five-star hotels, resorts, catering establishments and recreational facilities.”

An industry source says,“The demand for trained professionals in hotels will go up from 7 million in 2002 to 15 million by 2010.”

In order to meet the demand hotels are following a two-pronged approach. One is they are trying to retain their employees by giving them freebies like free lunch, entry to discotheques at a discounted rates and complimentary stay for families.

The other way is to have tie-ups with institutes to offer specialised courses which will meet the needs of the industry. It is for this reason that most hotel management aspirants are advised to undergo specialised training in diverse fields such as dietetics and hospital food, bakery and confectionery, hotel and catering law, property and finance management, entrepreneurship development and information technology. In fact, the Goa and Mumbai branches of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition are offering courses for cabin crew in airlines. The Academy of Culinary Arts, Goa, offers specialised courses in chef management and food production. The International Institute of Culinary Arts also offers industry-specific courses in chef development and food production for defence personnel.

The options for students pursuing hotel management are immense. But it is important for them to get the right training and acquire soft skills, then sky is the limit for them.
