PTU to govern admissions more closely

PTU to govern admissions more closely

Jalandhar: A fixed schedule for admission to the 33 percent management quota seats of engineering colleges in Punjab has been specified for the first time by the Punjab Technical University (PTU).

It had been observed by PTU that authorities of colleges affiliated with it started the admission process before the Combined Entrance Test (CET) of the PTU had been conducted. Now the PTU has ordered that these seats will only be allowed to be filled between July 12 and 31.

The situation had worsened as some of the most sought out colleges had begun asking for large amounts of donations, even amounting to lakhs of rupees, to admit students into the management quota.

This step by PTU is likely to make such activities in top colleges stop.

Another step that has been taken by PTU allows colleges to fix their own cut-off percentage for CET candidates in their Class XII result. This would help in stopping a student with lower marks to be given a seat.

Chief coordinator of CET, Dr. NP Singh informed that they had already received a request to this effect from Chitkara Institute, asking to keep a 60 percent criterion for admission to their course.

He also said that the university is planning to help colleges to fill management quota and empty seats by holding counselling under the PTU banner in various places.

The university CET is schedule to be held on May 2, for which around 28,900 applications have been received. The number may even reach 30,000 as the last date to submit the forms with late fee is April 28.

The seats too have gone through an increase in the past few years as around 10 new engineering colleges came up in the state of Punjab.
