Foreign Education Bill not a threat to Delhi University


With the admission process to begin soon, Delhi University is all set to introduce new measures to make admission process as easy and convenient for lakhs of aspirants. From posting the latest updates on information bulletin to providing applicants with a map of Delhi, a map of metro routes, feeder bus routes and other DTC buses routes, from introducing feeder bus services in north campus from one college to another to arranging volunteers to address your grievances, DU works hard in ensuring the admission process runs as smoothly as possible. Prof. S.K. Vij, Dean of Students’ Welfare, says, “The admission process in Delhi University is very user friendly. Every year we try to remove any glitches we faced last year during the admission process. We make sure that students applying to various DU colleges face no problems, and give them as many facilities as possible.”
In an attempt to answer students queries, open day presentations are conducted by DU authorities and teachers in different parts of the city explaining in detail about various courses, career options and tips to fill forms. DU’s community radio 90.4 which runs within 10 km radius is also very useful in keeping students updated about the admission procedure. Students acting as RJs also conduct interviews of legal and health experts which are very informative.
In an attempt to simplify the admission process, Vij added, “One must note that DU works as an industry during admissions. There are volunteers aiding you, telephone helplines 24 by 7, your e-mails are answered within a day. We keep the media updated and we make sure there are no back door entries.”
While hailing a new survey which says Delhi University is the leading university in the county, Prof. Vij assures that the Foreign Education Bill does not pose any threat to the premier university. “Delhi University is one of the most prestigious universities in India. Students from all over India flock to DU to get admission in one of its colleges. But we have limited seats and we can only give admission to a certain number of students. As a result the cut offs shoot up every year. On an average, 60 lakh students apply for 50,000 undergraduate seats. Hence, I don’t see the foreign education bill posing any threat to DU.”
He believes this bill will be a useful proposition as it will provide an alternative to students who fail to make it to DU. However, he expresses his reservation over the type of courses that will be available by these universities and the fees structure. “I don’t expect these foreign universities will be open to all courses which are pursued in India. They will only go for courses which will be profitable to them. So courses introduced in these universities will be oriented to science, management, commerce and other professional courses. They will not offer much choice in terms of courses offered and will take education as a business proposition,” he added.
One must remember that a student should give more importance to a course rather than college. Even Prof. Vij backs this and also advices students to apply to as many colleges and courses as available.
