CAT Percentile - Calculation

There are 3 steps in calculation of CAT percentile:

In CAT, three marks are awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. No marks are deducted for wrong answers in non-MCQ type questions.

  1. Each candidate is first scored section-wise and then the overall score is arrived at by totaling the section-wise scores
  2. Thereafter, these section-wise and overall scores (raw scores) are normalized to arrive at scaled CAT score
  3. The normalized scores are converted into percentiles which is reported on the CAT score card

What is the CAT Normalization Process?

The CAT exam is conducted in two different slots. The difficulty level of the exam of each session varies from the other. The CAT authorities follow a normalization process where the marks of every candidate are scaled to ensure equity in the marking process.

Parameters taken into consideration during CAT normalization process:

       Highest score

       Lowest score

       Mean score

       Median score

       Top 10 percentiles

       Lowest 10 percentiles

The CAT normalization process is in accordance with the GATE scoring process and the calculations are based on statistical equations.
