Mumbai University likely to start giving credits from June

Mumbai: Mumbai University is all set to go global. It is gearing up to implement the universally accepted credit and semester-based system for its courses in the next academic session starting in June.
This move by the university, academicians feel, will facilitate easy mobility of students, and will also make the curriculum flexible. A credit-based structure demands more accountability and rigorous training. It also standardises the exam system, say experts.
“Efforts are on to implement the new system across faculties from the 2010-11 session,” VN Magare, director of Board of College and
University Development (BCUD), said.
The Faculty of Arts is ready with its draft of programmes to be undertaken. “The draft will be placed before the faculty this month. Suggestions made for BA, MA, MPhil and PhD courses have been accepted by the board chairperson. We are aiming to go ahead with the changes in June,” Parvathi Venkatesh, dean of Arts faculty, said.
The Faculty of Science, too, is ready with its new courses. “We will introduce credit and semester system for undergraduate programmes. For post-graduate courses, there will be choice-based credit system and semester pattern. The changes have been okayed by the faculty. We are waiting for the academic council to take a final call. We propose to implement it from June,” SB Patil, dean of Science, said.
He added that the faculty had revised the curriculum of first year BSc in 2008-09 to make it more suitable for the credit and semester pattern. The second year syllabus was revised in 2009-10. “For 2010-11, the final year curriculum has been revised. So, the credit system will also be introduced in a phased manner,” Patil said.
“As far as introduction of the semester system is concerned, it will merely involve a change of nomenclature — from term to semester,” a senior university official said. “But the university is lagging behind in the credit system. Initiatives are being taken to speed up the process.
