From this year onwards the IIT-JEE Admission Committee has decided to implement 4.5 per cent reservation for minority community. This will be applicable within the 27 percent seats which are meant for Other Backward Classes (OBC) from this year.
All students who have submitted their forms online and forgot to mention their OBC status can now update this by visiting the official website of IIT-JEE. After updating their status students have to submit their certificates as proof before the exam on 8th April, 2012. All the applicants are required to submit their certificates to the respective zonal offices before 20th March, 2012.
IIT-JEE Chairman G.B. Reddy, said the application forms did not have this information, now students have to submit the forms first and after that they can submit the respective form to claim reservation.
He said, “We are giving enough time for candidates to secure the certificate. Non-submission of certificate will result in candidates not being considered for the category as a separate list will be prepared.”
As per the reservation, near about 430 minority candidates are likely to get admission in 17 IITs across the country. Mr. Reddy said the authorities will be able to disclose the actual figures after 25th March, 2012, when the IITs have been asked to submit the list of availability of seats. Some IITs are planning to increase the number of seats and others thinking to launch new programmes from this session. IIT-Hyderabad has written to the JEE Chairman that it will commence two new programmes this year - Civil Engineering and Engineering Science with 25 seats each.
Kanpur zone received maximum applications this year. Madras zone received about 78,000 applications. Last year, Bombay zone received the maximum applications.
