Science remains hot choice for DU aspirants

Science was, is and will always be a ‘hot’ option among DU aspirants. Every year a large number of students apply to science courses in Delhi University. And with the introduction of off-the-beaten-track science courses from this academic session, DU will witness an even greater rush of applicants vying for a seat.
This year Hindu College, very popular for its science courses, will offer an add-on course on forensic sciences. The college that witnesses one of the highest cut-offs every year, currently has several BSc programmes such as BSc (Hons) in chemistry, maths, physics, statistics and zoology.
Anju Srivastava, associate professor of chemistry at Hindu, in an interview to India Today, said, “Many students get drawn towards our add-on course in green chemistry. It could help biology students to go for a career in environmental sciences. Science is a stream that will never lose it shine in terms of career opportunities.”
In an attempt to meet the huge demand for these science courses, DU colleges are also strengthening their infrastructure to give a boost to science teaching. Even the zoology museum in KMC that boasts of rare species of animals has been expanded.
In Kirori Mal College, there is a separate department for evolution studies, a nanotechnology lab and an array of courses to choose from. Besides this two new floors are being constructed for the botany and zoology departments.
Even Miranda House is coming up with innovative schemes to nurture young talent with an aptitude for research and by providing assured career opportunities.
From this academic session, Ramjas College students will have access to a new research centre that will give them a cutting edge in science and technology.
Other colleges that are wooing aspirants for its science courses are Sri Venkateswara and Acharya Narendra Dev College. While the former will have a bioinformatics lab, the latter College will offer applicants a new course, BSc (H) biomedical sciences, which has great potential career-wise.
