Allow students to take exams, deemed varsity told

Court directive on plea seeking to declare disciplinary action illegal
The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMTS) (deemed university), Velappanchavadi, and the Saveetha School of Engineering, Thandalam, to allow students of the fourth year to attend classes from April 21 to May 6 and practical examinations from May 19 for those who secure minimum attendance.
They would include those who were suspended and unable to take examinations for want of attendance.
They should hold the theory examination for the students from May 27.
Similarly, the college authorities should allow such students of first, second and third year to attend classes from April 21 to May 18 and practical examinations from May 19 for those who secured the minimum attendance. The students should also appear for theory examination from May 27.
A Division Bench, comprising Justices D. Murugesan and M. Sathyanarayanan, passed the order on a petition seeking to declare the disciplinary action taken against the students of SIMTS in connection with an incident on January 19, consequent to reports of cancellation of their deemed university status, illegal.
They sought a consequent direction to accommodate willing students of the college in other colleges coming under Anna University.
The petition sought an interim direction to Anna University to conduct exams afresh for students who were not allowed to write the examinations and evaluate the papers and declare the results.
The petitioner said following the incident, an enquiry committee was constituted by the management.
Based on its report, the management classified 190 students who allegedly indulged in violence into four groups and imposed fines and other punishment. The college reopened on February 22.
The 190 students were kept away and not allowed to write the first semester examinations.
The Bench said further proceedings on the enquiry report may await further orders on the petition.
It hoped that the students would take the opportunity to attend the classes without causing further disturbance and create a conducive atmosphere.
The matter has been posted for June 10.
