Bangalore University might hike exam fee to make up for budget deficit

Bangalore University might hike exam fee to make up for budget deficit

Bangalore: Bangalore University is planning to increase affiliation fees and examination fees this year owing to lack of funds. This, because, for the third year in a row, the Bangalore University has presented a deficit budget.
“Fee at BU is low compared to that in other universities.
Expenditure on examinations has also increased with introduction of semester system. Even the syndicate and academic council felt the revision of fee was necessary,” said Dr N Prabhu Dev, vice-chancellor, BU.
“The affiliation fee is low, but we are not allowed to revise it. We have discussed this with the higher education department officials. There might be a hike inexam and affiliation fees,” he said.
University needsRs18,044.34 lakh, but has only Rs17,592.34 lakh. The university has presented a deficit budget of Rs451.42 lakh. The budget for 2010-11 was approved in the academic council meeting on Saturday. The year 2009-10 also saw a deficit budget of Rs6.74 crore on the total estimated amount of Rs135.91 crore. It was a deficit budget in 2008-09 as well. Most of the budget amount will be spent on the employee welfare fund, which includes salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff.
The revised pay scales as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) sixth pay commission has increased the university’s burden.
