The first step for IIT-JEE aspirants
Mumbai: This weekend, tenth standard students from across India will take the National Entrance Test conducted by various institutes, for the IIT-JEE preparatory course. For some of them, it is also a way of testing the waters and finding out whether they have what it takes to gain entry at IIT two years down the line.
Lokesh Khandelwal, director, Resonance, emphasises that the test is a good way to benchmark an individual's performance at national level in a wider pool of students from across the country, in addition to being a minimum requirement for getting admission in yearlong classroom programmes for IIT-JEE.
"A good performance in National Entrance Test indicates potential of the student towards IIT-JEE preparation and may secure scholarship in course fee of Resonance. Since the similar lot of students who are appearing in National Entrance Test now shall also be appearing in IIT-JEE two years later; it is a representative sample of prospective participants. The performance in this National Entrance Test would be a 'remote' indicator of the outcome of IIT-JEE later," said Khandelwal.
For instance, the entrance test conducted by Resonance comprises an Aptitude Test designed to test the competitive quotient, analytical aptitude and intelligence level of student. Questions are asked from maths, mental ability, science (physics and chemistry. The three hour test on objective pattern with negative marking will be conducted at 30 test centres across the country at the same time. An Optical Response Sheet (ORS) is used to mark the answers by the student. It is scanned and checked by computer-based software for the final result.
Khandelwal points out that there are several aspects to keep in mind while choosing an institute for the two-year preparatory course. First and foremost is the faculty, as understanding of concepts is the important key to crack this exam. Secondly the institute should have a proper plan of how to deliver the topics with adequate weightage on the chapters. Third is the competition. Students should compare their performance amidst students across country so that they can feel confident. Fourth are the results. It is better to ask some seniors who have studied in a coaching class to get a true picture and the focus should be on whether a student was elated by his result.
